Courageous Women of the Bible: Leaving Behind Fear and Insecurity for a Life of Confidence and Freedom by LaTan Roland Murphy

How Women Can Live with Boldness and Confidence Every Day

Every woman knows it's easy to lose sight of the heavenly power of God at work in our lives during times of hardship, exhaustion, stress, and change. But no matter the situation—whether it's our health, marriage, finances, family, or vocation—God has equipped all women with the power and influence to live freely and confidently.

With warmth and a welcoming style, speaker and award-winning writer LaTan Roland Murphy illuminates eleven courageous women in the Bible and shows how each was uniquely positioned for success because of her courageous choices. From Deborah to Jael to Mary, Murphy shows that these women chose to draw near to God; as a result, they were equipped with power for the supernatural ability to live courageous lives despite often undesirable circumstances. These stories will inspire women of all ages to trust God, minister to others, and live confidently and courageously no matter the season of life or what lies ahead.

Courageous Women of the Bible offers a refreshing look at familiar stories, and shows how courage was needed in their lives. But it goes one step further, by connecting the past with the present. How does this apply to life now? Latan Roland Murphy weaves the narrative so masterfully; you don’t even realize the mirror is in front of your face! Latan Roland Murphy is the author of Becoming A Woman of Interior Elegance and co-author of God's Provision in Tough Times. She teaches God’s Word with a beautiful use of words to illustrate the story and how it relates to the reader. The book promises a life of confidence and freedom, in exchange for fear and insecurity. It accomplishes that goal by showing how obstacles become opportunities when God is by our side. Time after time, LaTan shows how women “can courageously act and react with godly character, even in times of suffering.” “Women included are: • Deborah-Wife, judge, and ruler of Israel. Courage is needed to lead our families and others. • The Woman with an Issue of Blood-Physically sick woman. Courage is needed when facing rejection. • The Widow with Two Coins-Poor widow. Courage is needed to give generously in our financial hardships. • Jael-Wife, warrior, divided household, decisive and courageous. Courage is needed to seize opportunities-using what’s in our hands in the midst of obstacles. • Abigail-Faithful wife to a selfish, foolish man. Courage is needed to do the right thing, even when your spouse or others do not. • Bathsheba-Exposed bathing beauty caught in a web of sin. Courage is needed when we’ve acted in sin, were abused, molested, or feel violated. • The Samaritan Woman-Person with a troubled past of multiple marriages. Courage is needed to simply believe there is redemption and to tell others what Christ has done for us. • Mary Mother of Jesus-Young mother. Courage is needed to have a baby, especially in unpredictable times. Mary delivered the Son of God amidst great odds and pressure around her, and we are bearers of life in uncertain times. • The Shulammite Woman-Hopeless romantic. Courage is needed to express our physical love, knowing the marriage bed is undefiled. • Jochebed-Mother of Moses. Courage is needed as we surrender our children and the people we care about to God. • The Shunammite Woman-Hospitable wife. Courage is needed to show hospitality, taking an others-minded approach to life by welcoming others into our private lives, even when our prayers are unanswered.” LaTan uses transparency to reveal unstoppable faith. She is an encourager with a contagious enthusiasm for Biblical characters. Her words are soothing and measured. She reminds us Jesus notices all women in every arena of life. Thanks to Bethany Publishing House for the complimentary copy of this book. It was a refreshing reminder of how present God is in my life, as well as back in Bible times. Being able to relate to the women God placed within the pages of His word, His truth, was just what I needed. I mostly connected with three of the women’s stories. I see myself, and God’s presence, in such a new way. I am becoming courageous! As a result, I suffer less from anxiety. I also discovered not having a willing and obedient spirit was keeping me from experiencing the courage God wanted me to have. What I Liked Most About the Book I enjoy being able to read the introduction, then skip to the women that sounded most like myself before going back and reading the others. The introduction gives a summary of what each woman’s struggle was. My Four Favorite Women of the Bible My favorites are obviously those I either related to or wanted to become more like. Jael was decisive and seized the opportunities. While I am not decisive, I want to be. Reading about Jael has given me the courage to seek God’s guidance and make confident decisions. Abigail was a faithful wife married to a selfish foolish man. I wouldn’t call my husband a fool and he’s only selfish at times but so am I. Yet, I see where I could stand to be more loyal in honoring my husband when I don’t agree with his decisions. Jochebed surrendered her loved ones to God. I have difficulty doing that but she has given me a real-life example in doing so. Shunammite Woman put others before herself. I often forget to do this as I seek to make my way through a task list rather than taking time for others’ needs. While these are my favorite, there are wonderful lessons to be learned through the other lives shared in this book.

As someone who struggles with fear, this book was such a help to me! I love how the author uses the women of the Bible to encourage us to have godly courage in our life. Some of the women she illustrated had courage was Deborah; Mary, Mother of Jesus; Abigail; and my favorite, The Woman with an Issue of Blood. Each chapter is devoted to one of these Biblical women and the trials they faced and the courage they had to go forward and do what God called them to do. One of my favorite quotes in this book is, "When people grow weary of hearing our afflictions, Jesus doesn't." This was so comforting to my heart. I know that I can go before the Lord and tell him my fears and concerns and He is repulsed or turns away because He is tired of hearing it. He cares and listens. I really enjoyed the thoughtful questions at the end of each chapter. It really made me think about fear can control my life and gave me ideas of how I can make changes. There is also a really favorite part in the back of this book - journal pages for us to write out what is on our heart after reading each chapter. I loved this as it helps me to get things worked out when I write them down. My very favorite thing about this book is that is talks about courage from God. I don't have the personal courage sometimes to do what I need to do, but God is more than willing to give me the courage to go forward in life. He will do the same for you! I highly recommend this book to women who struggle with fear or a lack of courage. It will definitely show you how God has the courage you need to go forward. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars. *This book was provided to me for my honest review by the BlogAbout Blogger Network and Bethany House Publishers

Learn to live, love, and lead courageously— Do you lack courage? Confidence? This book is for you! When you think of courage and the Bible what do you think of? Probably mostly men. However, in Courageous Women of the Bible the author highlights eleven women who stood the test of endurance and persevered. These were no ordinary women. They showed courage in every way after going through trials, tests, and tragedies. Here are a few to wet your appetite: Deborah The woman who hemorrhaged The widow who gave her two coins Jael Bathsheba Mary, mother of Jesus And more! The author brings us closer to these women in each chapter. I felt like it was a getting-to-know-you session. Very encouraging and easy to understand. I loved how easy it was to read this book. Each chapter flowed nicely. This book could be read individually or as a group study. At the end of each chapter, the Courage Quest posed some thought-provoking questions. Chapter 12 gives the reader a place to journal with questions from each chapter. Such a nice touch to the end of the book. I give Courageous Women of the Bible four stars. I know you’ll enjoy getting to know these eleven women better and they will encourage you to leave behind your fears to be courageous! **Book has been provided courtesy of Bethany House and BlogAbout Blogger Network in exchange for my honest review.

When I think of courage and God’s word, I normally think of stories such as Moses and the Red Sea, Joshua and the Battle of Jericho, or David and Goliath. What do all these stories have in common? The heroes are all males. In this book, Latan Roland Murphy details the courageous stories of 11 women in the Bible, and they all demonstrate valuable life lessons for today’s Christian woman. Through this book, Latan shows you that God cares, and He will prevail, just like He did in the lives of so many courageous female characters in the Bible. In chapter 12, Latan gives you the opportunity to journal your thoughts and answers to a series of questions about these powerful women of courage and how their individual stories apply to you and your spiritual lives. I highly recommend this book for all Christian women. No matter what your circumstances are, each chapter will speak to you and give you the inspiration, encouragement, and scripture you need to help you fight for yourself, for your families, and for those you love.

Courageous Women Of The Bible Is a book that is about teaching you lessons on how to be a courageous woman and uses courageous women in The Bible as examples to backup what they are saying. Also in the book they have "courageous questions" for you to get thinking inwardly - is is introspectively authentic. It is an awesome book to read and one you should add to your library. I received a copy of this book from the Publisher and Netgalley; all of the opinions expessed in this review are all my own. if you would like to read more of my Christian book reviews go to christianlybookreviewers.blogspot.com

One of my favorite phrases when sharing with others something exciting that has been powerfully effective in my own life is “I’m just one hungry beggar sharing with others where I have found bread”. To me this best describes “Courageous Women of the Bible”. LaTan has transparently shared of her own life as well as looking into the lives of these women in the Bible to share with other hungry women where she has found bread that satisfies the heart and soul in a way that nothing else can satisfy. This book demonstrates that there is no struggle that is not common to us women. Maybe in different forms but even in this book, I realize that most of us, if not all, ask the same questions in our hearts that we may be ashamed to ask out loud. We see the common fears, the common questions that we all struggle with. One question in particular “Is Jesus enough…? Is he bigger than this problem or this issue I’m facing?” If our answer is “yes” this book shows that we can then truly rest in seeking Jesus alone. If our answer is “no”, this book helps answer why we frantically search for other means only to lead to disappointment and defeat. To me this book demonstrates how, when we run to Jesus, we can be filled, truly satisfied, and empowered with the courage to move forward no matter what the circumstances. Throughout the many years of my adult life, I have definitely experienced time and time again what is said in this book, that some days we may feel too weary to even go to Jesus but then when we consider all of the other options, we find that none of the other options provide LIFE, hope, peace, satisfaction and courage as Jesus does. In the Bible, Jesus says “I came that they may have life, and may have it abundantly”. LaTan lays out beautifully in this book, that at the core, we women are much the same with our needs, desires and dreams. As with these women in the Bible, when life took an unexpected turn in their lives, whether they knew about Jesus for years or desperately sought after Him as a last resort in time of need, each of them found Jesus to be and do just what He claims in His word – give LIFE. He gave the strength, hope and courage that these women, and we ourselves, so desperately long for and do not have on our own. LaTan demonstrates in this book how Jesus empowers us, everyday women, to look beyond what we see in ourselves to what He knows about us, and empowers us to rise above the circumstances, the lies from others and in our own heads, to press forward to all the LIFE that Jesus wants for us. I will definitely be purchasing this book to pass out to friends (especially young ladies) and co-workers that I see battling their current struggles. This is also a great book for group studies as there are many questions addressed within the chapters but there are also specific questions at the end of each chapter.

Courageous Women of the Bible isn’t a biography of Biblical women. It’s a motivational book that uses strong Bible women as examples to illustrate how women of today can also find courage and strength. This is a well thought out and well written book that helps equip us in our daily walk. I take a lot of inspiration from the women in the Bible—for they had only a fraction of the opportunities we have today, yet they were steadfast and didn’t let fear, insecurities, or hardships hold them back. The study questions at the end of each chapter (Courage Quest sections) are very thought provoking and help put things in perspective. This book is a how-to, an inspirational cheerleader, and also serves as a devotional. It’s most certainly motivated and encouraged me. This is a faith-filled and educational, and has a unique journaling chapter in the back of the book, corresponding with the topics of each of the previous chapters. My only wish is that the words were a little larger print. I received a complimentary copy from Bethany House.

Courageous Women of the Bible, by LaTan Murphy is a wonderful read! As I was reading, I felt every word was God-inspired. From the Judge Deborah to some of the lesser-known women like Jael or the Shulammite Woman - the lives of these women leap off the page. These women had some of the same fears and insecurities that I have, and God met them where they were. He gave them the courage to live out His will for their lives. LaTan Murphy's commentary and insight into the actions and feelings of these women inspires me. I want to be courageous! I want to know and do God's will. This book encourages me to know that God will help me just like He did these eleven women. He will make me courageous. He will give me the wisdom and strength to live courageously every single day! Thank you LaTan for writing this book. I look forward to reading many more books authored by you!

If you are trying to decide about purchasing this book, let me encourage you to do that now. This is a book you will pick up repeatedly and read a chapter and be challenged as well as changed. LaTan chose 11 women in the Bible and brought their stories and struggles to life. You become immersed as you read each page and feel as if you really know them. LaTan has done her homework, and that fact becomes obvious through the history and culture presented about each woman. The real take away though, is the spiritual truths that resonate within your own spirit as you study their lives. There is a tangible contrast between a tender intimacy and a rock solid strength each woman possesses as her courage increases. If you wish to find courage in your walk with God, let this book help guide you. Complete with questions, journal space and God inspired wisdom you will not regret investing in this book. It can be used in personal study or as a Bible study with others. I highly endorse this book and this author.

This is a "must read" for women searching for confidence through God’s wisdom. the author has an incredible ability to bring the stories of Biblical women to life and with application in today’s world. She presents the culture of the era, examples to guide us and then challenges us to reflect on how this is relevant in our lives. This author truly understands the context of these stories. She incorporates her own experiences as well, making her seem like a dear friend or next-door neighbor. It is more than a well-written account. She provides hope, practical guidance and truth. I cannot wait to use this in our women’s small group study. The questions at the end of each chapter will provide engaging topics for “meaty” conversation. Courage is a perfect topic for our times but this author provides grounded courage based upon Biblical principles. You will be blessed and empowered with this read!

LaTan brings these eleven women to life and shows just how much their lives and struggles are like my own. Every step of the way, she draws me in to feel what these women must have felt and understand how God enabled them to make the courageous choices they did. And she continually encourages me that I can make courageous choices, too. “No matter how unprepared or ill-equipped you feel, there’s no one more capable than a woman who dedicates herself fully to God and then willingly acts when courage demands her to.” This is not just a study of stories, it’s a progressive dinner. As LaTan brings us into each woman’s home, we get to know her as a friend and fellow-traveler with God.
