Rick Jordan was a Night Stalker in the Army before following his passion to open a summer camp for foster children, but the in the winter time he is typically alone. But when bloody footprints on his property lead to dead body belonging to someone from his past. Rick and Investigator Heather Shields work together to uncover who is behind everything before it is too late. An action packed suspense, filled with tension, and surprising twists along the way. I love how Ms. Hannon blends heart-pounding suspense with great character development and relationship building. Even though I kept wanting to turn the page and find out what would happen next, there were still lighter moments of humor, that in no way took away from the gravity of the situation. There was great relationship building between Rick and Heather as they work together to solve the mystery, and keep one step ahead of the killer. I admired how they opened up to each other, and grew in their faith over the course of their journey. There is a full cast of side characters that really bring this book to life, like Heather's co-workers and her father. The book follows a variety of characters that are each an important component to unraveling the case, sometimes switching from third person to first person narrative. Tight with tension and great storytelling, each chapter mounting the suspense and tying off some threads, while pulling out others leading to a climactic ending. Highly recommend this read from one of the Queens of Christian Suspense, you won't want to put it down! I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Excellent reading... Dark Ambitions Code of Honor #3 By Irene Hannon Rick Jordan needs help - a former army buddy is in trouble and he's disappeared. When one of his best friends recommends Phoenix Inc. Rick becomes their newest client and case is given to Phoenix's newest PI, ex-police detective Heather Shields. When the camp he runs has a visitor who leaves behind clues as to his identity, Rick knows that an army buddy he hasn't seen in over five needs his help. But with nothing to go on as to Boomer's whereabouts, this may be an almost impossible case. But Heather isn't dissuaded by the lack of information that Rick has. Using all the resources at her disposal she soon confirms that Boomer has indeed disappeared. The deeper she digs the more concerned she becomes that the outcome will not be favorable. Soon it becomes apparent that someone has something to hide and that they are willing to do whatever is necessary to keep their secrets firmly hidden in the past. And anyone who gets too close becomes a target. But what secret is so closely guarded that no cost is too high? That is the question that Heather and Rick want to find out. Dark Ambitions is the third book in the Code of Honor series which shares the story of Rick Jordan, the third member of the Treehouse Gang. This one throws in several other interesting side-threads that play out in a most interesting way. Let's just say if you set out to deceive you may want to be careful because the web you weave may catch you so that you can never get free. As with many of Irene Hannon's works, this is a contemporary romantic suspense set in the St. Louis, Missouri vicinity. There is a steady build-up in the suspense and the identity of the perpetrator is well hidden with hints that offer potential suspects without completely revealing who is behind everything. Dark Ambitions is perfectly named and well worth the late-night reading that you'll feel compelled to give this one. I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher with no expectations but that I provide my honest opinion - all thoughts expressed are my own.

Despite it being the third book in the series, this was the first one I read, but that didn't detract from the experience. It was interesting watching Rick Jordan, a former soldier with a big heart, deal with the complications of having a female PI who he was very attracted to and wanted to protect, but also didn't want to be chauvinistic and interfere with the job he was paying her for. But their story was only half the tale, because we were getting four other POVs- a business man preparing to run for president, the wife he adores, and the ex who wants him back. And a single first person POV of the villain killing people behind the scenes who appears to be one of the three. The climax was adrenaline-pulsing and devastating. Be ye warned. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and the opinions are my own.

Character Development Is Missing Irene Hannon is one of my favorite writers. I’ve loved her books that I’ve read, the characters and the Christian faith that’s been a part of the storylines. That’s why I was excited to read her newest book Dark Ambitions. Unfortunately, I thought Dark Ambitions was not as good as her other books. I’ve read the two other books in the Code of Honor series and liked them. What was different about Dark Ambitions? I found the character development was not too deep in this novel, the characters were rather flat and one dimensional. From the beginning of this book, the focus was on the physical attraction between Rick Jordan and Heather Shields dominated this book. So much so that it took away from the character development of the main characters. Rick, who has a heroic background as a former Army Night Stalker and runs a camp for foster children, seemed like a superficial jerk with his unkind judgmental opinion of the receptionist Nikki. If you took away one thing from this book, you knew that Rick and Heather were physically attracted to one another because of the numerous references to looks and their physical attraction. In most of Irene’s books, I find some likable relatable characters. In Dark Ambitions, not so much. Maybe Heather’s dad. As a reader, I want to have characters I like and care about, but that was missing in this book. A great deal of research went into getting the technical details right. The storyline of Dark Ambitions has some possibilities of making a good story. Where it fell short for me was the character development. Also, I missed having faith and God being a part of the character’s personal lives. While there was action in the story, there wasn’t a lot of suspense, nor twists and turns. While this book seemed to be a one-off, I do look forward to reading more of Irene Hannon’s books in the future. I would like to thank Revell Books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read Irene Hannon’s newest book Dark Ambitions. I was provided with a complimentary copy of the book and was under no obligation to give a favorable review.

This book has all of the elements of classic suspense fiction! Non-stop action, constant doubts about 'Who dun it?', and an ending that kept my adrenaline at warp speed! Irene Hannon wraps up her Code of Honor series with an outstanding conclusion and it will make you want to go back to read the first two books, if you haven't already. Dark Ambitions is a tale of ambition gone bad and it is filled with kidnapping, sabotage, murder, and obsessive love. There is, however, a reminder that integrity and goodness still prevail in our world today as Army veteran Rick Jordan and private investigator Heather Shields work together to uncover the reason behind the murders of several innocent people. What has been covered up for so long and who needs for it to remain hidden? It is during this case that Rick and Heather realize that they may both want more than just a work collaboration in their futures! This book is filled with good versus evil and obsessive, destructive love versus healthy, unselfish love. I recommend Dark Ambitions to anyone who enjoys Christian fiction and romantic suspense. I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell but a positive review was not required. These are my own thoughts.

: DARK AMBITIONS is book 3 in Ms. Hannon's Code of Honor series. It has been awhile since I read the first two but after a momentary bump I was fine and DARK AMBITIONS is stand alone. Heather and Rick are instantly attracted but she won't date clients and since he hired her to find an old Army buddy who is in trouble he is a client. That doesn't keep the sparks from flying though! The suspense is not as scary/disturbing at some I've read recently, but it is still there and I did guess whodunit easily enough. The writing is fast paced and I didn't want to put the book down. There are some soft swear words that might offend some readers and the faith message is very weak. Fans of romantic suspense will want to read DARK AMBITIONS. I was given a copy free. All opinions are my own.

Dark Ambitions is the third book from Irene Hannon’s series, Code of Honor. I have enjoyed this series and I believe this installment is my favorite to date. It is full of mystery, suspense, action and danger. There are quite a bit of twists and turns I did not see coming. I could not have predicted what was going to happen next. I am giving Dark Ambitions five stars and recommend it for readers who enjoy to read romantic suspense. I received this book from the publisher. This review is 100% my own honest opinion.

Another fantastic fast-paced and adrenaline-laced romantic suspense from Irene Hannon! The author always delivers intense action and high-level suspense in a well-written story with a believable and detailed plot, propelled by swoon-worthy heroes and noteworthy heroines; this book is no exception. The author also gives the villain a voice in the plot, which truly masks who the villain is until the very end (I love how she does that!). This book is the finale of the Code of Honor series but you don’t need to have read the first two books to enjoy this one. I did appreciate the cameo appearances of the characters from the first two books, though, as well as the lovable characters from Private Justice series (if you haven’t read those, you must read them). Rick, a former army helicopter pilot turned camp owner, is loyal, protective, honest, tender, and trustworthy. When he comes in contact with mysterious clues left by an old army buddy, he hires a private investigator group to help find his friend. Heather is a former St. Louis detective who has decided to slow down her career by joining a premier PI group, all made up of former military and law enforcement. She’s thorough, dedicated, sweet, and loving....and, of course, sparks fly from their initial encounter. The clues they gather turn strange, mysterious, confusing, and quite nefarious as multiple suspects become implicated in a deliciously complex plot. If you enjoy a heart-pounding romantic suspense (from the romance AND the suspense), you will absolutely love this book and the series. I received a copy of the book from Baker Publishing via Interviews & Reviews and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

Although I keep thinking that it will be hard to top each of the books in this series, this one is even better than the last! Rick is a solid guy with great character and treats Heather in a respectful manner as their friendship and romance develops. I liked the other secondary characters as well and the camaraderie that they share. There was great suspense with twits and turns that I did not see coming, which made the plot flow well and made the book hard to put down! I do not think you have to read this series in order, but doing so will allow you to enjoy even more great suspense! I highly recommend this book (and this series) to those who enjoy Christian suspense! I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Publishing. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.

Would the history of our nation be different if we had more people like Rick Jordan and Heather Shields in the right places at the right time? As I sit and ponder this story, I am reminded of rumors that floated across our nation some years back regarding certain political figures. Could a similar scenario depicted in this story actually play out in real life? I suppose if a great storyteller like Irene Hannon can see it taking shape in her mind, then it is feasible such events could really take place. As the saying goes, truth is often stranger than fiction. I enjoyed the suspense and action intertwined with a bit of romance. I especially liked the interaction between the various members of Phoenix Inc. I can imagine them getting together for a company party, and all the shenanigans as they bantered back and forth. I expect those were some lively times. In their line of work as private investigators, they would need times for getting away from the tension of their cases and just having fun. Although I cannot see myself as a PI, I would want to work with people like them if I had gone into that line of work. Follow along as Rick and Heather seek to find out what happened to Rick’s old Army buddy after Rick discovers that he had come looking for him. I recommend this book as well as the first two books in the series.

Wow! What a thrilling conclusion to an excellent series! The Code of Honor series has been full of edge of your seat suspense and swoon worthy romance and Dark Ambitions did not disappoint. As hard as it is to pick a favorite, I do believe this is it. Rick has always been portrayed as the rock solid, macho friend and I loved getting to know his story and what made him who is was. His path crossing with PI Heather Shields provides us with a strong feminine heroine you fall in love with. From the beginning, you root for these two strong, dynamic characters to get together as they traverse many dangers. Getting to reconnect with our favorite PI group from other series, Phoenix, is the perfect icing on the cake. This book is full of heart pounding adventure from the opening pages to the last. Well written with mystery and suspense to keep you guessing with heartwarming character you can’t help but love and cheer for. This is a must read! I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell through NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own.

This is, hands down, my favorite series of Hannon’s! Rick, after years running a camp for foster children, is thrust into his past when he believes he receives a disturbing visit from an ex-army friend. He hires Heather (of the beloved Phoenix, Inc.) to help him find his friend and make sure he’s ok. It doesn’t take long to track him down, but that just leads them to more questions. Full of twists that will keep you guessing until the end, Rick and Heather uncover more and more crime the farther they go on the path to finding the killer. Hannon is so skilled at getting you in the mind of the “bad guy”. Each new revelation will have you changing your mind on who you think is behind it all! Hannon is a master of romance, and never lets me down (even though I much prefer the suspense). She creates powerful connection, and just the right about of sizzle, with just a few well-placed words. I always appreciate her unique balance of romance and suspense. This is not your cookie cutter story, and you will love seeing all of your old Phoenix favorites as they tackle this new case. Another A+ from me! I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a good suspense read. I was given an early copy of this manuscript through NetGalley for my honest review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Can I give this 10 stars? There is one thing you can always count on with an Irene Hannon book. It will be a great read. Ms Hannon is at the top of her form with this final in the "Code of Honor" series. I always like it when an author brings in characters from past books. It gives a sense of reality in a work of fiction. She brings in the characters from her her prior series "Private Justice". All of the characters have the feel of being real. The emotions, reactions, and inspirations are front and center in this book. Even the nemesis characters have a robust presence, and sometimes are even likable. That's hard for an author to do, but Ms Hannon does it well. I admit I was completely fooled by who the unspecified bad guy was. There were several possibilities, and Ms Hannon made it very difficult to guess correctly due to the unique way she presented the story. It wasn't until the end that I had that slap on your forehead moment, and I had to smile at the answer. Another mark of a great author is attention to detail. This is especially appreciated when the details are beyond the author's ordinary expertise. Ms Hannon definitely gets points from me for her research into the workings of helicopters. Thanks for the extra effort you put in, Ms Hannon. It contributes to what makes your books great.

f you enjoy good clean Christian mystery and suspense, this one is a must! From the first page the author drew me in and didn’t let go, and held me right though the epilogue! There is almost non-stop action here, and I found myself holding my breath, more than a few times. You will find surprises here and as the facts begin to unfold, a bit of sweet romance. I was, tongue in cheek, blown away when the bombshells began falling! I have read many books by Irene Hannon, and this one rates right at the top, and now I can’t wait for the next! I received this book through the Publisher Revell blogger program, and was not required to give a positive review.

This is a fantastic finale to Irene’s latest suspense trilogy! The characters of Rick and Heather were superb and the storyline for this one can’t be beat. I was immediately swept up in the mystery from the beginning of the book and the conclusion to the book was extremely satisfying. There were multiple twists in the story which made it even more intriguing. There are political elements as well that were a perfect addition to the story. Irene writes some of the BEST Christian suspense out there and this is another great one. Highly recommend! I received this book from the publisher and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.

** “The truth is, no one can see the future except God. All we can do is make the best choice we’re capable of with the information we have in the present. … And sometimes we make mistakes.” ** Irene Hannon wraps up her Code of Honor series with the heart-thumping “Dark Ambitions.” When Rick Jordan finds blood on his property and clues that lead to a missing Army buddy, he hires private investigator Heather Shields to look for his missing friend, Boomer. As Rick and Heather dig deeper and deeper into the case, they discover much more intrigue — mysterious deaths, manipulation, fraud, corruption and malfeasance — and a blooming relationship. Hannon always does a great job of developing an intense, action-packed romantic thriller, and “Dark Ambitions” is no exception. Filled with so many twists and turns to keep the reader guessing until the very end, this story combines great character development with incredible story telling. And with Heather’s job at the private investigation firm Phoenix, Inc., Hannon allows us to revisit old friends from her other series. She does a great job of developing very real and relatable characters — both Heather and Rick struggle with overcome past pains and second guessing choices they have made. She also includes other great themes like just doing the best you are capable of under the circumstances; dealing with fear; not second guessing every decision; and the importance of making our very best choices. “Dark Ambitions” only includes a few brief, mild references to God — mostly in offering quick prayers for help and guidance. This book could be read as a standalone, but I’d recommend reading the rest of the series’ installments. Fans of authors like Lynette Eason, Colleen Coble and Mary Higgins Clark will love this book, as well as fans of strong female characters like you’ll find in novels by Cara Putman. Five stars out of five. Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group, provided this complimentary copy for my honest, unbiased review.

I'm a big fan of author, Irene Hannon's, writing style - both Christian romance and suspense - and I'm thrilled whenever she has a new release. This author never disappoints. Her stories always bring new twists and turns that I don't expect. I read a lot of suspense novels and often will have "whodunit" figured out well before the end. Not so with Dark Ambitions! I was completely caught off guard by who was behind the things that Heather and her Phoenix Inc. colleagues put their PI skills to work on. I also loved this story focused on Treehouse Gang member, Rick, and we still got to hear from Kristin and Colin. You could read this book as a stand-alone, but I highly recommend reading books one and two from this Code of Honor Series. Sweet romance, subtle faith references, and good, solid characters make for a book you simply won't want to put down. Loved every minute of reading Dark Ambitions.

Irene Hannon is one of my top three favorite authors, so naturally any book she releases- be it romance or romantic suspense- goes right onto my TBR list! I had very much enjoyed the previous books in this series, so I especially looked forward to this one. Being the third book in the series, I would certainly recommend reading the others first, but if you haven't it can be read on it's own too. You'll miss a bit of the background on a few minor characters, but not to a point where the story doesn't make sense. Now, if I were to be completely honest, I must admit that whereas normally I find myself drawn in within the first few pages of her books, this one did take several chapters in to really connect to this one. There were a lot of key players in this story that needed introduced, and it wasn't completely clear in the beginning how it all would go together. This was rather confusing at first. Once I caught up on who was who and how it related, I was hooked! As I said, we were introduced to a lot of key players in this particular story. We were given the knowledge that each one was keeping secrets, but were never fully given the full details. This cast suspicion in several different directions and really kept me guessing. It had a surprise ending that I thought was absolutely fantastic, and rather unique too. I will say I figured it out closer to the end, but truly it was only moments before the big reveal that it truly clicked. It's always fun when reading a suspense novel to- well, be left in suspense--- and this book certainly did that well. Of course, if there is anything Irene Hannon does better than suspense, it is most certainly romance and I really enjoyed the love story between Rick and Heather. We had been introduced to Rick in the first books of this series, and it was great to revisit the Treehouse Gang and get to know his character even better and watch him fall in love. I loved the romance between them, and wanted to read more. Overall, this was a fantastic read and well worth the wait since the previous Code of Honor novel. If you enjoy a good romantic suspense, this is certainly one I would recommend. **I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher for consideration. All thoughts are 100% my own.

The hired gun had missed his target! He had found him, but he had not killed him - now he had until the end of the week to do so. And he promised results, even if he had to do it his own way. On the other hand, Rick Jordan was also looking for Boomer -- not to kill him but to save him. He had not seen him, but Rick knew he had been there. He had seen the blood, he found the items that only Boomer would have left, and he had made a promise as well. And he would keep it. Thus begins Irene Hannon’s newest thriller. Set in rural Missouri, the search for Boomer and his hunter would press Rick to his limits and would involve the team of private investigators from Phoenix, Inc. in an increasingly dark case. The book held this reader’s attention from page one - actually before page one, if one counts the prologue. Hannon’s faith-based thriller will provide a great winter read for those who enjoy the genre. The book will easily fit into the church library collection as well as that of many public libraries. For the reader looking for the perfect book to read this winter, Dark Ambitions may fill the bill. ______________ This review is based on a free electronic copy provided by the publisher for the purpose of creating this review. First things first...."Dark Ambitions" by Irene Hannon is book 3 in the "Men of Valor" series. I had not read either of the first two books, and had no problem jumping right in with this one. The author does a fabulous job of catching the reader up on everything you need to know without making you feel overwhelmed or confused. Now, on to the substance of this book itself. I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed "Dark Ambitions". This is a Christian Romantic Suspense title, and it lives up to the genre in all three senses of the phrase. The two main characters are clearly Christians, and live their lives as such. However, they never come across as preachy in any way. They are just good people, living out what they believe. As such, both characters provide great role models for living out your faith in your everyday life. Of course, there is a budding romance between the two, and it is written beautifully. I cannot express how much I appreciate the author writing a clean, believable, honest, trope-free romance between two people who are obviously meant for each other. There are no silly misunderstandings, no overhearing-something-and-misinterpreting plotlines, no hate-at-first-sight-leads-to-love unrealistic changes of mind. Two people meet, like each other, get to know each other, and fall in love. So refreshing! As for the suspense part of the story....it's excellent! What starts out as a simple missing persons case quickly grows into so much more. Multiple murders, old overseas crimes, stalking, and more all add to the complexity of the investigation without leaving the reader feeling overwhelmed. I was able to guess part of the end result, but part of it surprised me (which is always a good thing). To me this is optimal...it means the reader has been given enough clues to figure out part of the mystery, but the author still has a couple of surprises up her sleeve. On a final note, the epilogue was lovely! I enjoyed learning more about what happened to Heather and Rick after the main story ended. All in all, I highly recommend "Dark Ambitions". It is the perfect mix of romance and suspense, with just the write tone of Christian undercurrent. Five out of five chunks of nice, creamy Camembert!

From page 1 until the conclusion, the final book in Irene Hannon's Code of Honor series is action filled and suspense driven. It's great to meet the characters of the Phoenix PI company once again, and this books focuses on the newest member of the group, Heather Shields. Rick Jordan, her client, has found items left in his storage shed as well as drops of blood that indicate his military buddy, Jackson Dunn, had been on his property. When he can't find him or contact him, Rick hires Heather to find his friend. This book has so many fantastic twists and turns with multiple villains and an absolutely shocking ending. It was difficult to put it down until I reached the last page; and, even then, I was shaking my head and going what??? Definitely one of Hannon's best suspense books that contained a wonderful set of characters, a superb plot, a good faith element, and a romance that didn't overwhelm the suspense. I hate to say good-bye to the Phoenix PI group and hope that Hannon will bring them back in another series!

Dark Ambitions is the third book in the Code of Honor series by Irene Hannon and a very polished suspense novel. Every time I crack open an Irene Hannon book it seems like I’ve come home. Not only because I lived in St. Louis for twenty years and know the setting well, but because I am very comfortable with the exemplary way Ms. Hannon writes. She captures the genre well. Her stories are exciting but totally believable, and the romance sizzles beneath the surface. The research into law enforcement procedures shines. Her descriptions of an icy winter day in St. Louis took me right back to when I lived there. The story was so riveting, I read it in just over a day. I am never disappointed in a book by Ms. Hannon. She writes the most caring, upstanding heroes I love the way her books interconnect but still can stand alone. She shows how colleagues can work together seamlessly, be people of character, and rely on God. “The truth is, no one can see the future except God. All we can do is make the best choice we’re capable of with the information we have in the present.” *A complimentary copy of this book was provided by Revell Publishers through Interviews and Reviews. A third story for the third member of the Treehouse Gang. We also get to get back with our favorite PI firm and the guys (plus Nikki). I forgot how hilarious she is, especially with Devlin. Rick Jordan gets a surprise visit from an old army mate under mysterious circumstances. But Rick never actually sees the guy and so, in trying to locate him, Rick enlists the help of Phoenix Inc. under the recommendation of Colin. Assigned to his case is the newest member of the firm, Heather Shields. There are "accidents" that Rick and Heather suspect are connected murders, documents and evidence that seem to point to a cover-up, and enough suspicious activity to make your head spin. I suspected several different people for various reasons and one of them ended up being right :) It's really sad though, what people will do for security or revenge or whatnot. It's not often in a series that you get to see all the couples further on in life. This ending was particularly fun because... that would be a spoiler, but it's fun!! This book has it all - crossover, suspense, crazy people, etc. Irene Hannon has not let me down yet!

I have read nearly all of Hannon's romantic suspense books, but I think Dark Ambitions might just be my favorite! I really liked both of our main characters. Heather Shields, former homicide detective turned private eye (Yay for the return of the Phoenix, Inc. crew!). And Rick Jordan, former Night Stalker turned youth ministeries worker. Both of these characters had a lot of depth and chemistry that made them great together and individually. Of course, the romance got to be a bit much for my tastes, but I enjoyed the story so much I was able to ignore that for the most part. The story starts with Rick trying to find an old army friend and hiring Heather to help him, and the plot quickly deadly. Many twists and turns keep Heather and Rick--and the reader--on their toes. Hannon also includes her trademark action and suspense liberally throughout. With so many leads and so many potential "bad guys," you are kept guessing until the end. All in all, I greatly enjoyed this newest release from veteran author, Irene Hannon! I highly recommend this book to all fans of romantic suspense! FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Revell Reads. I was not required to write a positive review. These are my honest thoughts and opinions.
