Dark Hollow (Charlie Parker Series #2) by John Connolly

When John Connolly burst upon the literary suspense scene in 1999, he was an immediate international sensation. His Every Dead Thing became an instantaneous bestseller in England, and here in America, his writing was greeted with extraordinary accolades. He won the prestigious Shamus Award for Best First Private Eye Novel, and, as the San Francisco Examiner wrote, "John Connolly's tale is as riveting and chilling as Thomas Harris's The Silence of the Lambs and James Patterson's Kiss the Girls."
Now, Connolly returns with Dark Hollow, a terrifying and ingenious novel of a murderous spree that reaches back decades into the victims' pasts. Back again is ex-New York Police Detective Charlie "Bird" Parker, who has returned to his hometown of Scarborough, Maine, after the vicious killings of his wife and daughter; it is time to leave the bloodstained streets of Manhattan and rebuild his family's house -- as well as his own life. But for Bird, returning to his roots means digging through a mountain of terror, as memories of his father's and grandfather's untimely deaths resurface and drive him to join the manhunt for the killer of yet another mother and child. Though the obvious suspect is Billy Purdue, the violent former husband of the murdered young woman, another player lurks in this disturbing drama, someone entangled in the dark hollow of Bird's past.
Darkly atmospheric, tense and imbued with the page-turning ferocity that only the finest crime fiction offers, Dark Hollow is a stunning successor to Every Dead Thing, a testament to the burgeoning power of John Connolly to tell stories that thrill, frighten and haunt the soul.

I love all of John Connolly's books in the Charlie Parker series. They are amazing and feel so real. It feels like you are right there with him when Charlie discovers qho the murderer is. If you buy these books, I guarentee this is money well spent.

This is an excellent book. The story is touching in an odd kind of way. Charlie Parker¿s sense of honor and desire to help right a wrong is the driving force behind the book. The book is highly recommended.

I have only recently discovered this series and it has become one of my favorites. Plenty of twists and turns to keep the reader interested.

A very suspenseful book, well written, with ending which makes you want to continue to read. There a lot of references to the first book in the series and it helps if one would read it first and not wait too long to read this book. Because of the references and flashbacks it sometimes makes it hard to follow, especially some of the reoccurring characters.

One can't help but be drawn in with John Connolly's writing style. His Charlie Parker series is top notch on my reading list, a mix of Stephen King & Michael Connelly.

If you liked Every Dead Thing, then you are in for a treat in Dark Hollow. This book delves deeper into the persona of Charlie Bird Parker. Plus, Angel and Louis assist Bird in his travels (well, help kill people), and how much cooler can you get than that conservative duo?

This is my first John Connolly novel. It caught my attention because of the area it is set in. The main character comes home to Scarborough, Maine. I, myself, grew up in southern Maine and found the authors description of the local area perfect. It was a book that I had trouble putting down. I have great anticipation for the next John Connolly novel that I read.

It seems like several lifetimes ago that Charlie ¿Bird¿ Parker¿s world was perfect, but those happy times ended less than a year ago. He enjoyed working as an officer in the New York Police Department and loved his wife and his little girl. His idyllic life ended when a killer murdered his wife and child. Charlie crossed over the line and accompanied by a semi-retired burglar and a professional assassin, he killed his family¿s murderer.

Charlie lives alone in his grandfather¿s house in Scarborough, Maine, hoping he will attain some measure of peace. However, Charlie soon finds himself drawn into the troubled life of Billie Purdue, who many locals believe stole a million dollar from a desperate and nasty Boston gangster. When Billie¿s ex-wife and their child are killed with the mother¿s lips sewn tightly together, the police believe he did it. Charlie spirit dreams of being asked to help prove Billie is innocent and so reluctantly investigates a case filled with many players who want the inquiries stopped.

DARK HOLLOW is a very dark atmospheric gothic-like novel that takes place in shadows where few people dare venture. Charlie is an anti-hero seeking peace, but instead finds an opportunity for redemption after taking the law into his own hands. His cohorts are likable felons and good friends to Charlie. The plot is loaded with twists and turns and just when the reader expects a straight road to the climax, another curve surfaces, making it almost impossible to guess the ending. John Connolly is a brilliant storyteller who seems like a Ludlum with a dash of King to add spice to the fabulous mix.

After discovering John Connolly's Charlie Parker series I approached this with a question of whether the author could match and continue his stunning fiction. Although the mystery is what initially draws me to a book the author exhibits a strong understanding of the importance of words and their ability to compose visual scenes. This book is gripping but not for the faint of heart; I am hooked.

This was a hard book to initially get interested in. I had to read almost a whole chapter before I really got the desire to keep turning pages. After that, the story started coming together nicely and has been a pretty good read since.

I have read two of John Connoly's books in four days. I have been drawn into his character Charlie Parker's world,  And what a frightening world it is. These books grab you and propel you into darkness. Connoly's evil  Characters will chill you to the bone. One thing is for sure, you won't be able to put them down. I am starting number Three in his series. He has officially become my favorite author for 2013. What a vivid imagination! Thank you Sir.
