Death Drops (Natural Remedies Mystery Series #1) by Chrystle Fiedler

When a holistic doctor’s beloved aunt is murdered and the valuable recipe for her skin cream stolen, Dr. Willow McQuade must find the killer before he strikes again.

Dr. Willow McQuade, N.D., a twenty-eight-year-old doctor specializing in natural remedies, has decided to take sabbatical and visit her Aunt Claire, the owner of Nature’s Way Market and Cafe in idyllic Greenport, Long Island. The idea of rest and relaxation is quickly forgotten when Willow arrives from a morning meditative walk to discover her Aunt Claire dead in the store, a strange almond-like smell emanating from her mouth and a bottle of flower essences by her side.

Despite her Zen nature and penchant for yoga, Aunt Claire had a knack for getting into confrontations with folks. An activist, she held weekly meetings for different causes every week in the store. The police want to believe the death is accidental—but Willow thinks she may have been poisoned.

Things get worse when Aunt Claire’s valuable recipe for a new natural age-defying formula, Fresh Face, is stolen during a store break-in, and an attempt is made on Willow’s life. Desperate for a way out of the mess, she turns to a handsome young cop Jackson Spade. Together the two set about solving the case the natural way—through a combination of hard work, common sense, and a dose of luck.

Big disapointment.

The book lacks story for all the Remedies she wants to give everybody through out the book. Stick with the story line and leave self healing up to people to investigate themselves.

While I felt this may be a good start to a new series, I also have to admit it needs a bit of work. Characters need to be developed more fully and I am hoping future plots won't be quite so simplistic as Fiedler gets more practice as an author. I plan to read more if these book as very light reading.

New, Naturopathic Mystery a Hit Chrystle Fiedler has written a mystery that combines the essence of a cozy mystery with the ingredients of naturopathy. Willow McQuade is a N.D., a Naturopathic Doctor who is visiting her aunt Claire, who has been working on a formula for the "fountain of youth," technically known as an "age-defying-herbal cream." The formula is almost perfected, and potentially worth millions, but Claire is found dead by Willow, who suspects that someone added poison to one of Claire's flower essence bottles. The pace picks up immediately, as one of Claire's workers instantly accuses Willow of being responsible for her aunt's death. Complications abound, including the discovery that the formula has been stolen, the jealous worker, Willow's mother and sister, two policemen who clearly suspect Willow as their prime suspect, a number of peoplewho Willow discovers hated her aunt and had threatened her. In spite of everything being thrown at her, though, Willow is determined to find out who killed her aunt. There's two friends from New York who join Willow as fellow workers in her shop, and a potential romance with a former policeman. For readers who are interested in holistic medicine remedies, there's an added bonus of doctoral advice from Dr. McQuade to a patient at the beginning of each chapter. Fiedler has created an engaging protagonist, who is eager to dispense naturopathic advice to help others. The combination of fast-paced mystery and naturopathy makes this book quite a pick-me-up for the dedicated mystery reader. Highly recommended. JaneFricker
