An almost twenty-year-old unsolved murder from Florida’s pot-hauling days gets Hannah Smith’s attention, but so does a more immediate problem. A private museum devoted solely to the state’s earliest settlers and pioneers has been announced, and many of Hannah’s friends and neighbors in Sulfur Wells are being pressured to make contributions.

The problem is the whole thing is a scam, and when Hannah sets out to uncover who’s behind it, she discovers that things are even worse than she thought. The museum scam is a front for a real estate power play, her entire village is in danger of being wiped out—and the forces behind it have no intention of letting anything, or anyone, stand in their way.

A pleasant enough read, but the main characters made unlikely choices throughout the book, especially the deputy who should have known better. The ending seems to have been phoned in. There were several options for a good ending, but Mr. White (or his co-writer) took the easy way out and left us with a very flat final chapter.

"Deceived, a Hannah Smith series by Randy Wayne White is an action packed follow up to "Gone". So much happens in the first 60 pages that I couldn't put it down. White is a seasoned writer and does what he does best. He creates memorable characters that have their own voice, a sense of place, a connection to community and their own past and they are lasting. Hannah Smith is likable and down to earth, not the sophisticated, over-the-top aggressive type. She's a private eye / fishing guide who takes care of her funny and peculiar Mother Loretta. They share an old cracker house on an ancient Indian shell mound somewhere on Florida's Gulf Coast. Hannah is in her thirties, tall with black hair and big feet and she has some interesting friends, Tomlinson and Marion (Doc) Ford among them. Hannah comes from an old Florida family known for strong willed, self reliant women. Whether she's on the water or on the trail discovering the truth about drug runners, scams or murder, Hannah gets herself into dangerous circumstances where she has to rely on her instincts to escape. The dog chasing scene in an abandoned house is chilling! Randy Wayne White is the New York Times best selling author of twenty Doc Ford books. His knowledge of Florida terrain and history are perfect backdrops for his mystery thrillers and his characters whether they inhabit Doc Ford's Dinkin's Bay or Hannah Smith's Sulphur Wells. The people become your friends and the places become your home. "Deceived" is a winner!

OK fun read. Having a female as the main character is a bit distracting, because Mr White does not write like a woman thinks or feels at all.

If you like the Doc Ford series you'll like this new series almost as much! I only got this new Hannah Smith book because I was jonsing for the next Doc Ford book (Due Out 3-15!!) and was hooked. Good read and she is Docs new love interest and the stories do connect unexpectedly. Which makes the wait a bit easier. Good job Randy and thanks.

This story was a complete disappointment. I'm a huge fan of Randy Wayne White, but he has lost something. There is a time to retire, and I think his has come. I've become familiar with the characters and settings of his books, and have always looked forward to the next one. This is the last one I will buy. Simply rambling writing, without substance. Very sorry to say this, but it's what I see. It seems that the book was published without anyone actually reading and editing it.

I loved Hannah Smith, the main character. She’s smart, tough, and she cares about the people of her community. This book is the second Hannah Smith novel. I have not read the first but I enjoyed this one so much I plan to find the first one. The book take place in the Sanibel and Captiva Islands area of southwestern Florida. Hannah is a fishing guide and private detective, having inherited her uncle’s business when he passed away. Her family has lived in the area for generations, one of many families that made their living fishing until fishing regulations twenty years ago caused some families to turn to pot-hauling and worse to make ends meet. Hannah’s mother convinces her to check on an old friend after her mother does not hear from the friend for a couple of days. When Hannah gets to the home, which is located in an isolated area, she finds that the front door has been broken with an ax. When she goes inside to look for her mother’s friend she is attacked by two pit bulls and a person in a mask and raincoat wielding an ax. She escapes and returns with the police to find that the house has been cleaned up. The body of her mother’s friend is found in a pond on the property. While Hannah is being questioned by the police her fishing client from the day before shows up. It turns out he is the county special prosecutor. He appears to be romantically interested in Hannah even though after she lets him know she is already in a relationship. He hires Hannah in her role of private detective to help investigate some possible cases of fraudulent charities targeting the elderly. Hannah’s mother and her friends are among those targeted by one of the charities so Hannah takes the case. In addition, Hannah’s mother’s new neighbors are harassing her mother about her garden. The new neighbors somehow able to get permits which allowed them to destroy an ancient Indian shellmound to build their mansion. When a local police officer begins asking questions about what happened to the artifacts on the site Hannah joins her in investigating the new owners and where they dumped the shellmound. It turns out the new neighbors have a shady past. Hannah ends up with several close calls before putting the pieces together to solve the murder and find the people behind the charity fraud. Disclosure: I received this book as part of a Goodreads giveaway on the premise that I would review it.
