Overview

Deep Six by D P Lyle M.D.

Nominated for 2017 Shamus Award, Best First Private Eye Novel

Ex-professional baseball player Jake Longly adamantly refuses to work for his father, wanting no part of Ray's PI world. He prefers to hang out at his beachfront bar and chase bikinis along the sugary beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama. But Ray can be persuasive, so Jake finds himself staking out the home of wealthy Barbara Plummer, a suspected adulteress. The mission seems simple enough hang around, take a few pictures, sip a little bourbon. Except Barbara gets herself murdered right under Jake's nose.

When Jake launches into an investigation of his target's homicide, he quickly runs afoul of Ukrainian mobster Victor Borkov. Aided by his new girlfriend Nicole Jamison and Tommy Pancake Jeffers—his behemoth employee with crazy computer skills—Jake tries to peel away the layers of the crime. The deeper the intrepid trio delves, the more murders start to pile up, leading them to Borkov's massive yacht where they just might be deep-sixed.

Mickey Spillane meets Carl Hiaasen in this hilarious murder mystery. D.P. Lyle is an amazing and gifted author. His writing is crisp and fast-paced, and his research is spot on. And if you have a chance to hear him speak, do so. I've had the pleasure of both reading his works and hearing him speak at conferences and other engagements. He is such a delight, so funny, and knows exactly how to deliver a wonderful story. As to Deep Six, the story is remarkable in many ways. I'll mention two. (See the back jacket of the book for more!) First, it is difficult to inject humor into a thriller. In Deep Six, Lyle does so in the best tradition of Carl Hiaasen and the shake-and-bake cool style of Mickey Spillane fast-forwarded to the 21th century. Deep Six also has really fun characters. The protagonist is an ex-professional baseball player, which is a unique take on the private detective. I suspect we may be seeing a little more of Jake Longly and his sidekick Nicole. Hope so. Highly recommended, you won't want to miss this one.
