More blank than the proverbial “blank canvas” is the humble piece of paper. Paper is the substrate for Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity and also holds in the greasy glut of a McDonald’s cheeseburger. It spans the gamut of human experience.

Paper is also painfully ordinary as a medium. Devoid of inherent inspiration, the blank piece of paper is verbal shorthand for creative block. However, a material this commonplace can be a creative ally precisely because of its ho-hum familiarity. Paper possesses quotidian street cred—everyone knows how it is supposed to function, and yet, it has hidden talents that lie dormant. Its unsuspecting demeanor
hides the potential for radical degrees of interpretation. A piece of paper can grow up to become an interactive game, a four-dimensional flexographic animation, a fortune teller, a legitimate document of truth, or a convincing counterfeit.

The possibilities are as vast as they are humbling.
