Learn how to customize your clothesdesigning new pattern shapes, style lines, and fashion details with Sara Alm's easy-to-follow instruction!
In Sara Alm's Designing Clothes with the Flat Pattern Method, sewers learn a technique that opens up myriad possibilities for making one-of-a-kind garments. By using basic pattern blocks called slopers, Alm shows sewers how to design new shapes, style lines, and fashion detailscreating patterns for nearly any piece of clothing they want to sew. Take a basic straight skirt pattern, for example, and convert it into any other skirt design. Change the hemline or the basic shape of a skirt from straight to A-line to full swing with multiple gores. Try adjusting the waistline placement or convert it from waistband to waistline-facing. Change the style and placement of the closures. The options are endless once sewers understand the basics of flat-pattern designing, which is explained in the book.
Designing Clothes with the Flat Pattern Method is divided into sections: skirts, tops, and pants. While many of the same principles apply to each garment type, there are different techniques to take into account. As soon as sewers know how to design from these three slopers, that knowledge is easily transferred to designing dresses, shorts, jumpsuits, and outerwear. The principles and techniques taught are also easily transferable to designing children's clothes. By following extensive technique instruction in each of the three categories, twelve different garments are designed from each basic sloper and photographed on models so readers fully understand the process and the end result.
Thanks to Designing Clothes with the Flat Pattern Method, passionate sewers will be as skilled as Project Runway contestants in no time!

I like how this book offers a beginner-to-expert level, in-depth tutoring on how to create your own patterns for clothing for yourself and others. The flat pattern method allows for quick and easy design and alterations that I didn’t realize could be done by someone like me. Beautiful designs in a beautiful book which is straightforward and easy to follow. I think anyone wanting to design their own clothing — especially those involved in costume design, in particular — would find this a must-have book.
I honestly enjoy the information inside this book, Designing Clothes with the Flat Pattern Method by Sara Alm. It's actually what you would need to understand pattern making and how to create certain styles. The steps inside helps you to create the right shape and design to put on paper and use as a pattern. Of course, if you are beginning or have a little knowledge of patterns, at least this book can be a helpful guidance to aid in your passion for designing clothing! That is exactly what it's doing for me! The steps are easily seen inside, with all the helpful pictures of a person using real pattern drawings and how they just take that one master pattern and change them ever so slightly to create a new look. The book sort of helped open my mind and eyes to the many different possibilities to create new pattern ideas and actually, I have been stumped for some time to get past the traditional look. I really wanted a way to change the plain style up, and now this book taught me how too! Plus, it's super easy! I must say that this book has it all. It really patterns designing so much easier, plus less searching online for inspiration or steps! Finally, I do enjoy the manipulations of the clothing inside. Especially the neckline, from the more slant to the regular round neckline. Plus, with the real visuals, I feel inspired to follow the steps and create some of these wonderful patterns right now! I honestly love my sewing machine, trying to get clothing I design to sell and now I have some new patterns to work with and I just love it! Oh, by the way, if you ever wanted to know about fasteners, well this book has that too and it's also extremely helpful! review sample received
