About the Author

Detrás del Acero expresses a yearning to love and be loved, railing against injustice, and following an inherited wanderlust in pursuit of creative relevance. Born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, I consider myself a Mediterranean amalgam of Romans, Moors, and Jews, a genetic trifecta of ancestors that for thousands of years roamed the European appendages of Iberia and Italy before emigrating to America (Carvalko, a bastardization of Carvalho and before that Carvajal). One theme in the book continues that journey exploring the depths of emotion through the people who fought and worked to build America, Native Americans, immigrants, the workers, such as my grandfather, a committed immigrant, who helped unionize bakery workers in NYC at the turn of the last century; and my father, a union man, organizer, and local president for 35 years, who fought for sweatshop workers. As a kid I saw strikers circle the flames of 50 gallon drums, their rebellious frustration often boiling over. I saw their weary soberness at the union hall on Sunday. At the other end of the country, before Chavez, my wife, a Nuevomexicana, worked in a caldron of onion fields for twenty-five cents a basket. I know the struggle first hand. I dropped out of high school. For ten years, I worked, either pick and shovel or as a mechanic in the service, before one day emerging as a lawyer acting out in the hurly-burley of the courtroom, often defending the indigent, and then traveling on the international stage (representing the one percenters), where I witnessed, as I had as a young man working on a farm located on the Rosebud Indian Reservation, the hopelessness of poverty in the bowels of Asia, Africa and South America. I hold an MFA (writing), JD law, and a BS Engineering.
