Overview

Divorce Can Be Deadly by Emma Jameson

"Two ghosts troubled Dr. Benjamin Bones. One he feared would never release him. Another he worried might slip away, however much he tightened his grip... ."

So begins Divorce Can Be Deadly, the long-awaited second book in Emma Jameson's wartime cozy mystery series. Return to Birdswing, a tiny Cornish village, in the bitter winter of 1939 and revisit old friends as they embark on more amateur sleuthing. Irrepressible Lady Juliet is taking a correspondence course in private detection and is vexed by the return of her soon-to-be-ex-husband. Meanwhile, not only has Ben failed to realize the depth of her feelings for him, but his obsession with Lucy, the Fenton House ghost, grows stronger.

When a bloodless, half-naked corpse is discovered in a great house in a nearby village, Ben and Juliet must again follow the clues to solve the case. Join them as they pry into the secret lives of villagers in seemingly picture-perfect Barking, including a vicar who hides from his secretary, a baron haunted by the Great War, and a butler who just might have done it.

Brimming with romance, historical details, and warm humor, Divorce Can Be Deadly is already being called "worth the wait!"

The author would like to thank everyone who enjoyed the first book in the series, Marriage Can Be Murder, for waiting patiently (more or less) for this second entry in the series. She hopes they'll also try her first novella, Dr. Bones and the Christmas Wish. It's a charming story of love lost and love found, set just after the events of book #2, Divorce Can Be Deadly.

And yes, she is already making plans for book #3, Friendship May Be Fatal, and another novella, Dr. Bones and the Lost Love Letter.

"Divorce Can Be Deadly" is a page-turning delight. All is not what it appears at first glance. Spies, ancient local lore and murder meld together seamlessly in this engaging second installment of Emma Jameson's Dr. Bones mystery series set in World War II Cornwall. Sparks fly as Ben and Lady Juliet put their heads together to track down a ruthless killer. I eagerly await the next book.

Loved it. Book two continues with wit and a believable but not predictable villain. If you liked the first one, you'll enjoy this as well.

I stumbled upon this while browsing English mysteries and I am delightfully reassured that elegant writing, clever plot twists, good manners and heartfelt spirit are alive and well. I look forward to the next in series.

Oh how I love her characters! Emma Jameson has done it again. I really wish I'd found her in a few more years, so that I could binge read her novels instead of having to wait for the next one to be released. Her main characters all have wonderful flaws that make them unique and lovable. Her descriptions of the countryside and communities aren't belabored, but are crafted well enough to bring them to life. And her plots aren't contrived, silly or senseless. They're intriguing and well thought out. I know I will have to wait awhile for the next installment, but it will be a wait well worth the time.
