This is an excellent guide for beginning and intermediate "drawers." There's a creative variety of labs that can be done in any order and for as long as desired. It's great on my non-color Nook!

The excercises in this book are varied enough so that almost anyone can be inspired. This book is more gitting the pen to the paper than talking about the theroy of drawing. Very entertaining to read and makes a great refrence book.

I gave it 4.5 stars instead of 5 only because I wish it were twice as long!Sonheim has done a beautiful job presenting 52 labs on drawing figures; that is, people, bugs, animals, and imaginary creatures. This book does 2 things:1. convinces you that the way you draw, the way you create cannot be wrong; Sonheim features multiple artists who started their careers by doodling.2. teaches you how to make 'outsider art'. (my favorite kind!)Her instructions are clear, and presented visually in a way that is easily comprehensible. You need very simple materials; you may already have many of them and you can also find many at thrift stores. (at least I have...) The featured artists made me shake my head in awe. But I do wish there had been a little bit more Teesha Moore---royalty in current Outside Art and in empowering anyone and everyone to make art.Empowering you is exactly what Sonheim does. You will not be able to use this book without emerging as an artist at the other end. I appreciate that one of her labs is copying other artist's works---this teaches you to appreciate their technique and shows you that you cannot help but add your own technique and quirks. My other little wish is that she included more brand names. She touts Copic markers (oh, if you can afford them, get them. At $6 a pop I buy a few a month and they are refillable)and FW inks, but I wish she had included brands on all recommended media.Delicious and nutritious!!
