Doctor Who - Warriors of the Deep - Episode 131 available in DVD
This episode has its flaws, I'll admit, but I have to confess a certain fondness for it. Peter Davison remains my favorite Doctor, bringing just the right mix of bravery and nobility to his portrayal, and this episode features him as a Doctor who (no pun intended) ends the episode with a perfect portrayal of regret at the actions he has been forced to take. The final line of the show may be one of the greatest lines of the entire series, encapsulating the sorrow for the loss of life, both human and alien: "There should have been another way." When Davison utters this, one realizes why Doctor Who, tacky production values aside, remains such a favorite: it features clever storylines, wonderfully written dialogue, and may provide violence as the ultimate solution, but rarely without regret that such a solution was necessary. The episode does have its flaws-it is horribly overlit, the monsters look completely unconvincing (but it's Doctor Who, so what do you expect?), etc., but the less than happy ending and the conflicted feelings of the title character make this well worth your while. In short, while I wouldn't reccomend this episode if this is one's first foray into the world of Doctor Who, if you're familiar with the series, reexamine this episode. I think you'll find it has more redeemong values than one would expect.
