In Jane Austen's gentle parody of gothic fiction, romance addict Catherine Morland (Felicity Jones) is invited to a medieval country house that appeals to her most lurid fantasies. There, she forms a close friendship with the younger son on the estate, Henry Tilney (JJ Feild), but their budding romance is mysteriously cut short. This 2007 BBC production, which had its U.S. debut on January 20 as part of Masterpiece Theatre's 2008 Complete Jane Austen cycle, was adapted from Austen's novel by Andrew Davies, whose illustrious resume includes the acclaimed 1995 version of Pride & Prejudice and the big-screen hit Bridget Jones's Diary.

In 2007, Masterpiece Theatre came out with several new adaptations for the Jane Austen novels, most of which were not very inspiring. But they finally got it right with Northanger Abbey. The casting was perfect - not only did the actors look their parts, but their acting was superb. I wasn't disappointed with any of the actors - which is a first for me. There was also a good chemistry evident between the lead roles which showed in the movie and made it all the more enjoyable. A definate must-see even if you haven't read the book; it enjoyable and easy to follow. The only thing is I wish it had been longer.

I really loved this take on Northanger Abbey. Recently I have started to watch all of these new Austen films prepared by BBC (who else?) and so far, I have really enjoyed all of them. Northanger Abbey, as a book, is not my favourite Austen story (I am sure I am not alone with this) and I left this film last, simply because I wasn`t that interested. But when I got around to actually watching it, I was not at all disappointed. The casting is superb, I loved the actor who played Henry Tilney and Carey Mulligan is a treat, as always. The tale is sweet as ever. It is pretty much about this very young, and somewhat immature girl, who read too much romance and one too many ghost stories. She befriends the Tilneys, a family with an overbearing father, a reckless older brother, a lovely sister, and Henry Tilney, who is a very charming young man and gets an invitation to their ancient house where she suspects secrets...I am not going to give away anything more, check it out for yourselves. I had a good time watching this movie. It is a bit on the short side, mind you, so some things are left out. It is useful if you have read the book. Highly recommended for Austen fans.

I really enjoyed this movie. It was well produced and brought the book to life. Nice just to have movie based off book in general, especially one that doesnt stray from orignal work. The main actors did a wonderful job. The tone even matched Jane Austens lighter writing style for this novel, the heroine is supposed to be slightly immature, silly if you will, from reading too much fiction.

The movie is well done & the performances are good, the story just doesn't have much to it, which is not the movie's fault, just is what it is. After you've seen it once, there's no need to see it again.

Not my favorite Jane Austen movie by Masterpiece Theater, but if you like the Masterpiece series and Jane Austen, you'll enjoy this. The title girl is really annoying to me--she's so stupid and makes a fool of herself over and over. But it's a good story. Again, Masterpiece Theater knows how to do it right, and though not as good as "Sense and Sensibility" or "Pride and Prejudice," it's a must have for Jane Austen collectors.

This version is so cute and passionate - just like the novel. The actress playing Catherine did a superb job as did the actor playing Henry. I think all the characters were appropriately casted and interpreted. Henry is so handsome in this version - the old BBC Henry was not. That helps make the movie more enjoyable. LOL.

I liked this production. It kept to the book by containing a narrator for at least the beginning of the story and at the end. It was entertaining.

The film's good and liked the ending. Is it just me or did the actor that played Henry remind anyone of James McAvoy? Anyway this is about a girl name Catherine who loves to read and has quite an imagination. Recommend seeing this along with the films based on Austen's other books.

A wonderful adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. It is enjoyable to watch, especially since the movie really is based on the book. The plot and characterization stayed true to the novel. If you enjoyed the book this movie will not disappoint you.

I really enjoyed this version. Watched it once and had to have! The way the ending is done is kind of blunt, but still a good watch!
