Everyone on Layna knows that another version of themselves could be living on Earth, but they hope not. That planet has no proof of the afterlife and is full of violence and suffering. Who on Earth could be as privileged as someone on Layna?
Sixteen-year-old Oz and his best friend Faylin aren't so lucky--and now Oz knows. For weeks, he's been mentally traveling between his idyllic life as a member of the Ascendant tribe on Layna and his mundane life on Earth. Oz feels he can tell no one, not even Faylin. Ascendants believe in pure mental health, and obedient, earnest Faylin is one of the most devout Ascendants of all.
But it may be Faylin, not Oz, who is really in danger. Ascendants fear the Closing Prophecy, a prediction that a "bad soul" of their own will destroy proof of the afterlife. When it is learned that Faylin's Earth double is suspected of a crime, she becomes a target, and the once beloved Ascendants quickly transform into a destructive force.
As their once rose-colored reality on Layna turns murky, Oz and Faylin realize they can only trust each other. Together, the two must uncover the connections between their lives on Layna and on Earth--connections that transcend space, time, and death--before it's too late.
