Overview

Elizabeth and Zenobia by Jessica Miller, Yelena Bryksenkova

Abandoned by her mother and neglected by her scientist father, timid Elizabeth Murmur has only her fearless friend, Zenobia, for company. And Zenobia’s company can be very trying! When Elizabeth’s father takes them to live in his family home, Witheringe House, Zenobia becomes obsessed with finding a ghost in the creepy old mansion and forces Elizabeth to hold séances and wander the rooms at night. With Zenobia’s constant pushing, Elizabeth investigates the history of the house and learns that it does hold a terrible secret: Her father’s younger sister disappeared from the grounds without a trace years ago.

Elizabeth and Zenobia is a wonderfully compelling middle-grade story about friendship, courage, and the power of the imagination.

"We ran room to room... the plants followed." These plants have been locked in the west wing for a long time. Elizabeth was forbidden to enter this wing of their new house, the Witheringe House, by her father. There were reasons for the forbiddance, but they did not listen. Elizabeth is the main character. Elizabeth is a very timid girl with blond hair and brown eyes who is scared by almost everything. Zenobia, Elizabeth's imaginary friend, has black hair, blue eyes and is brave and searches for ghosts. Elizabeth and Zenobia start exploring the house. Zenobia holds some seances by candle light using a Ouija board. They find a spirit in the west wing of the house in the nursery. Elizabeth and Zenobia stir up the secrets hiding in the Witheringe House's walls. The walls and the garden are the most dangerous things in the whole house. The strange gardener, that nobody knows about but the girls, grafts plants. Grafting is when you cut a plant away from its roots and attach it to another plant's roots so they grow into one plant. Can they avoid getting grafted by the gardener? I recommend this book for ages 9 and up because this book is not very complicated. I did not like this book as much as others I have read in this genre. At the beginning the book is very engaging but by the middle of it, I could already tell how it was going to end. It was expecting more suspense. Giovanna P. Age 11, Connecticut/Western Massachusetts Mensa
