Couldn't get past the very beginning when the king hits and rapes the 16 year old heroine. I don't expect a Disney experience in these stories, but a brutal rape, though luckily not completely described, is not my idea of a fairytale.

I enjoyed reading this version of Beauty and the Beast except for the rape scene and the last chapter. The book did not need either.

I really wanted to love this story as I’ve loved other beauty and the beast themed novels. I read the reviews prior to starting and the majority of them were very positive so I gave it a try. It’s a quick read at about 150 pages. The story fell flat because I couldn’t muster enough emotion for the characters. Maybe that was the intention of what happened in the first chapter but it didn’t work for me. I couldnt figure out what the significance of the bad event in the first chapter was even after I finished the book. For a character written to be so smart and magical it actually made me mad that she didn’t use magic in the first chapter to avoid the badness. I also was frustrated that she took so long to remember the main issue of the book. Not sure if I will try another by this author.

I love fairytale retellings, especially Beauty and the Beast—and this is a unique version. Zuleika's enchantress mother has died, so when King Thorn comes seeking her, Zuleika goes with him in her place. He requests a curse to place on an enemy, and then forces himself violently upon her. She flees, and ends up in the land ruled by Thorn's brother, Prince Varden, who has himself been cursed to be in the form of a beast. I liked the magic, and there were a couple of nice twists. However, it took the main characters a long time to figure out stuff that was obvious to the reader, which made things drag a bit. Because of the rape scene, this book is suited for older teens and up.

This was a great book. I enjoyed reading it as it may pulls you into the story as if you were right there on the Isle

I liked the story but it made no sense to me, that it took Zuleika so long to figure things out. Of course it would have made for a much shorter story if she had figured it out sooner. Still it was frustrating. I also would have liked more details into the villain's motive for doing what he did, and more background into the relationship between him and the hero.

Loved fairy tales as a child and loved this version as a great great grandmother. To bad the reviewer of the bad rape scene didn’t go on and enjoy the rest of the book.

Liked the twists, didn't care for the length it took for the heroine to figure it all out.
