About the Author
Frances Largeman-Roth, RD, has been the Senior Food & Nutrition Editor at Health magazine for nearly five years. She covers healthy recipes, food trends, weight loss issues, and the latest nutrition research. Frances was previously part of the editorial team at the Discovery Health Channel, and also held the post of managing editor at FoodFit.com. She has had the opportunity to work with top chefs and food personalities, putting a healthier spin on recipes from Jamie Oliver, Bobby Flay, Emily Luchetti, Gale Gand, Rick Bayless, and Steven Raichlen, among others. Frances is a member of the American Dietetic Association and the International Association of Culinary Professionals.
Frances earned her undergraduate degree from Cornell University and completed her dietetic internship at Columbia University in New York. She's done several national radio and TV appearances, including the Today Show, Good Morning America, CBS Early Show, Fox & Friends, and CNN. Frances has also used her food background to judge two Food Network Challenges. She lives in Brooklyn with her husband, daughter, and their flat-coated retriever, Millie.

It's a fabulous time to have a bun in the oven. Being a mom-to-be is no longer something to hide. It's a state to celebrate, a time to embrace the changes going on in your body. In fact, our entire society seems to be baby-crazed, with the dietary lapses and stiletto-wearing habits of celebrity moms-to-be being closely watched. But you don't need to follow the bump watches in the pages of Us Weeklyyou've got your own bump to consider. The next nine months are going to be a wild ride, including hunger pangs mixed with indigestion and moments of utter bliss tossed together with extreme fatigue and nausea. Through it all, the most important things on your mind will be your baby's health.

Life doesn't necessarily slow down just because you're expecting, and that's where I come in. As a registered dietitian with a decade of experience creating nutrition information and developing recipes specifically targeted to women, I know what it takes to create a dish that's healthy, delicious, and really hits the spot. As Health magazine's senior food and nutrition editor since 2004, it's been my task to come up with mouthwatering dishes that keep busy women satisfied and able to fit into little black dresses.
Plus, I'm picky as all get out, and when I started on my own quest to become a mom, I quickly found there wasn't anything on the shelves that really spoke to me. All of the so-called pregnancy cookbooks and nutrition manuals contained recipes that were about as exciting as the early-bird special at Sizzler. Come on, people! Pregnant women still have taste buds. The recipes I created for the book had to meet my high standards for taste and crave-worthiness, and since I was pregnant while I was working on them, I was the perfect guinea pig.
Going through my first pregnancy while writing this book gave me a front-line view of what advice is realistic, and what is a lot of well-meaning hooey. Normally, I'm a fruit, yogurt, and whole-grain kind of girl in the morning, but during my first trimester, I was all about egg-and-cheese breakfast sandwiches with ketchup, bags of salty pretzels, and jugs of Orangina. (I discovered that when you're pregnant and trying to get through the workday, a settled stomach often outweighs a perfectly balanced meal.) But I also found ways to get around my lust for salty carbs and sneak in some fruit and veggies when I was feeling more steady. Little swapslike an organic cheese stick instead of my usual yogurthelped me fit in calcium and protein while satisfying my salty cravings.
The Feed the Belly recipes I've created (starting on page 150) range from easy, cooling smoothies to healthier versions of comfort foods like chicken pot pie and burgers. All are easy to make, and I've included tips for even easier and faster variations. Every recipe has a complete nutritional analysis, and I've made note of particularly important nutrients for your baby's growth as Baby Bonuses. Loved the book! I did not want it to end. Gives a great base on nutrition pregnant for the first time.
What a perfect book for all grandparents-to-be to give their expectant, or soon-to-be expectant, daughters and daughters-in-law. Much better than our outdated and possibly resented advice! Although this book is so delightful, Grandma will probably read it first, buy another copy, and keep one for herself. Largeman-Roth takes the reader on the journey from pre-pregnancy through the child's birth and breast feeding. As an encouraging, never judgmental coach, she explains how pregnant mothers can best take care of themselves and their babies by discussing what foods are healthiest and why. In a supportive tone, she offers the mother-to-be realistic advice on everything from food cravings, to dealing with gas, to healthy snacks, to eating out at fast food places to drinking enough water to best equipping your kitchen. Largeman-Roth must have a great sense of humor--this book is fun! It's also remarkably easy to read and understand despite the large amount of nutritional information it contains. There is nothing dry or boring in "Feed the Belly". Largeman-Roth makes it all seem simple. She comes across like a helpful confidante who wants you to follow her advice without being compulsive about eating healthy. There's a whole chapter on exercise--something that other pregnancy nutrition books skip completely. It includes a list of places to buy hard-to-find maternity exercise clothes, as well as a list of yoga poses that are safe for pregnancy. With obesity such a looming issue these days, Largeman-Roth does the reader a great service by encouraging pregnant women to get--and stay--active. And that's good news for our grandkids too.
If you're trying to get pregnant or are pregnant, this is a book to have on your must-read list! These days when pregnant women everywhere are told what to eat and what not to eat and considering that eating is one of the things always on our minds, it's nice to have a guide that takes all of these things into consideration. This book not only discusses amounts of nutrients needed and how to get them, but yummy recipes to use that are "pregnancy safe". It's an easy read that will give you many, "I didn't know that!" moments. My favorite parts of the book are the "Belly Tips." Small tips throughout each chapter that provide you with creative ideas to use like -- how to drink more water and get more folic acid. Seems simple, but Largeman-Roth really provides easy tips that make you say, "What a great idea!" You'll love it from beginning to end.
