Fierce: How Competing for Myself Changed Everything by Aly Raisman

The New York Times bestseller!

Discover Aly Raisman's inspiring story of dedication, perseverance, and learning to think positively even in the toughest times on her path to gold medal success in two Olympic Games—and beyond.

Aly Raisman first stepped onto a gymnastics mat as a toddler in a "mommy & me" gymnastics class. No one could have predicted then that sixteen years later, she'd be standing on an Olympic podium, having achieved her dreams.

Aly's road to success was full of hard work, perseverance, and victories, but not without its hardships. Aly faced many obstacles, from naysayers who said she'd never make it in gymnastics to classmates who shamed her for her athletic body to a devastating betrayal of trust. Through it all, Aly surrounded herself with supportive family, friends, and teammates and found the inner strength to remain positive and believe in herself. Now, in her own words, Aly shows what it takes to be a champion on and off the floor, and takes readers on a behind-the-scenes journey before, during, and after her remarkable achievements in two Olympic Games—through her highest highs, lowest lows, and all the moments in between.

Honest and heartfelt, frank and funny, Aly's story is enhanced with never-before-published photos, excerpts from the personal journals she's kept since childhood that chronicle memorable moments with her teammates, and hard-won advice for readers who strive to rise above challenges, learn to love themselves, and make their own dreams come true.

From Bella C Have you ever wondered what it is like to be an olympic gymnast? Aly Raisman exhibits the feeling of being an olympic gymnast in her book “Fierce.” I would definitely rate this book a five due to the details and overall moral of the story. I really enjoy how she helps the reader understand what it is like to be her in any given situation. Although, I did find the book slow at certain points. I do not think I could ever be an olympic gymnast given the way Aly describes it. The amazing stories are definitely what kept me intrigued. I was hooked in by the fourth chapter when things for Aly’s gymnastic career started becoming more serious. I love the fact that she loves gymnastics so much and she has such a passion for the sport. Her meets remind me of my soccer and basketball games and how embarrassing it is to mess up in front of all those people. As I got to know Aly’s personality better, I realised what a fun, upbeat person she really is and what a cool person she would be to meet. I really do wonder how she does it all. In the beginning of the story, I noticed Aly’s family is very supportive of her and her decisions. I can see she is raised to believe in herself and her dreams. I am so impressed at how she leveled up and learned all of her skills so quickly. I was definitely surprised that Aly started a bit later than other gymnasts although once she started she just flew. I was even more blown away by the fact that she could do all these amazing skills at such a young age. Aly is a terrific gymnast and I believe it is amazing that she can juggle everything she does. It was really the amazing stories that kept me so captivated. It is crazy to me for such young girls to be traveling every single week. I noticed a lot of suspense type things in this book from meet scores to home life. Although the book was slow at times, it was overall a great story. Since this book was able to keep me so intrigued, I definitely believe that it will keep other kids engaged as well. ME/EE Very well written. Gave it a “fi

There were things that I was able to relate to reading this book like being tired and sore after practice, trying to fit in as much homework as possible after school before practice, and then whatever homework I didn't get done, do it after practice. While I never made it even close to becoming elite in my gymnastics life, I still know what the behind the scenes stuff is like. This book was definitely all Aly, after watching a lot of her interviews I could tell that the voice and tone were all hers. I loved reading about Aly's struggles and overcoming obstacles to get where she is.

From dreaming of Olympic gold to living the Olympic dream; from practicing her signature on the living room wall, to signing autographs for so many young fans with a similar vision as her own, Aly's journey to Olympic success is one of incredible determination, persistence, heartache, and triumph. But this book is not just about Aly overcoming doubts, both from people around her, and her own inner doubt—we are given an emotional tale chock-full (or should I say chalk full ;-) of heartfelt guidance and encouragement so eloquently intertwined within her story—how all people, no matter their age or what their story, can find happiness, compassion, and peace within themselves despite living in a world full of fierce judgment. A must read for anyone looking to create positive change.
