Already established as a famous and successful novelist, Edith Wharton was living in France when World War I began. In early 1915, the French Red Cross asked her to report on the needs of the hospitals on the war front, and what she witnessed led her to the idea of narrating her experiences in a series of articles for Scribner’s Magazine that would later be compiled in the present volume.
