About the Author

Rachel Dukes hails from San Diego, California. A graduate from The Center for Cartoon Studies, they works as a cartoonist and illustrator and is the creator of the cat-centric webcomic Frankie Comics. Their work has also appeared in several anthologies, including Beyond, Oath, Bottoms Up, As You Were, and Tim'rous Beastie. Clients include Brain Quest, College Humor, BOOM! Studios, Lion Forge Comics, and The Nib, among others. Rachel lives in Los Angeles. They are thankful for coffee, gingham, and readers like you.

Gr 6 Up—Frankie, an impossibly cute Siamese with baby blue bubble eyes, has been the star of Dukes's long-standing pet project (pun intended) for years—Dukes began Frankie Comics as a webcomic in 2012. Slinking, purring, and scratching her way to her position as Dukes's cartoon muse, Frankie is a bit of an oddball, even for a cat, enjoying pizza and sitting on toothbrushes. Unlike the archetypical standoffish, self-important cat, she's cuddly and ever present. And she's clearly well loved, as this volume reveals as much about Dukes and their partner as it does about Frankie—the minutiae of human lives filled with work, snacks, exercise, and lots of hanging around are not entirely dissimilar from feline antics. Dukes has a precise, bubbly cartooning style, at once documentary and dreamy. The book's webcomic origin is clear, and each snapshot is delightful, but the volume feels more like a mixtape than a complete story. Nonetheless, Frankie, bouncing off the walls in full, fabulous color, nudges her way into readers' hearts thanks to Dukes's loving reportage. After a couple finds a kitten at their door, even the most mundane routines become different.

In a series of full-color minicomics, Frankie, a blue-eyed black and white cat, gets into typical kitty mischief while also bringing joy to her humans, Rachel and Mike. A webcomic based on real life is the basis for this book, a collection of cute, sweet, and silly scenes rather than a story with an overarching plot. From sleepy snuggles to sassily stealing people food, Frankie is always lovable with her expressive face and oversized eyes. One series of scenes features duplicate panels of everyday activities such as using the bathroom, making dinner, and being on the computer, one side sans cat and the other with Frankie always in the way. Anyone who lives with a social cat will surely relate. Another scene shows Frankie stealing a hair tie, a favorite toy of cats everywhere. Crisp, vibrantly colored, mostly black-lined cartoon drawings are in panels, sometimes outlined, sometimes open, with ample white space throughout. Rachel presents white; Mike has light brown skin and black hair. This ode to a beloved pet delightfully highlights the joys of living with a feline companion.
