Overview

From Sand and Ash by Amy Harmon

Italy, 1943—Germany occupies much of the country, placing the Jewish population in grave danger during World War II.

As children, Eva Rosselli and Angelo Bianco were raised like family but divided by circumstance and religion. As the years go by, the two find themselves falling in love. But the church calls to Angelo and, despite his deep feelings for Eva, he chooses the priesthood.

Now, more than a decade later, Angelo is a Catholic priest and Eva is a woman with nowhere to turn. With the Gestapo closing in, Angelo hides Eva within the walls of a convent, where Eva discovers she is just one of many Jews being sheltered by the Catholic Church.

But Eva can’t quietly hide, waiting for deliverance, while Angelo risks everything to keep her safe. With the world at war and so many in need, Angelo and Eva face trial after trial, choice after agonizing choice, until fate and fortune finally collide, leaving them with the most difficult decision of all.

Amy Harmon is a new author for me and I will be reading many more of hers. I recommend From Sand and Ash to anyone who enjoys historical fiction or just a good book. She gets right into the story at the outset and keeps you enthralled to the end. I am so glad I found her.

Eva and Angelo grow up together in a sort of mixed family. His grandparents take him in. They live with Eva and her father. She considers his grandparents as her grandparents. Her father considers him the son he didn't have. All of these bonds are tested by the events of WWII. Eva and her father are Jewish. Hitler has control of Italy. Eva and Angelo are getting older. They find that the love they have for each other is more than just familial. Angelo's goal has always been to become a Catholic priest. His position allows him to help people (especially the Jews) more than he could otherwise, but it also means he can never marry. This book is full of beauty and tragedy. It follows two people in love and the conflict and consequences of everyone's choices. It portrays the best of worst sides of human nature. Mostly it focuses on the lengths people will go to help each other. My heart hasn't felt so much in awhile. From Sand and Ash is an experience that should not be passed up. It's an epic love story that will restore your faith in humanity.

I just love Amy Harmon’s writing! It’s just the perfect combination of all the things that I love/crave to read about. This book felt different someway, heavier and with good reason. Our main characters Eva and Angelo live in Italy when in was occupied by Germany, and Eva being jewish is in grave danger. Eva and Angelo’s story starts much sooner than that, since they were kids they have lived together, they have grown up as brother and sister except they never felt that way about each other, there was always something more, a different kind of love. Circumstances pull them together and a part throughout the book and every chapter was a new way for me to get extremely anxious about the future of my beloved characters. The book also has some history in it, Amy explains that some events and even names of German officers are real and that gives the book another look altogether, this book made me sad, angry and perplexed to the extremes people go for what they believe is the right thing when it is so obvious that it is not, that there is no way that the annihilations of thousands of people is the right thing to do. First book I read and already in my favorites of the year, if I could give it to everyone to read I would.

War, brutality, forbidden love, and courage, are among some of the many themes coursing through the veins of this tale. At the heart of the story are two childhood friends - Angelo who is encouraged by his family to enter priesthood due to a debilitated leg, and Eva, a young Italian Jewish girl. The bond between the two has always been extraordinary, but like many lifetime friendships, love takes hold. As Hitler and the Nazi regime infiltrate Italy, the Jewish people begin facing segregation, internment, and death. Father Angelo secretly works for the Vatican to help hide and protect Jewish families and Eva also tries to help the resistance. With each passing chapter, the stakes increase for the characters and tensions rise. Historical facts are welded seamlessly in the storyline and are never jarring, but always accurate and provides a good historical timeline for the effects that World War II had on Italy. The passion I experienced for the characters ratcheted up with each new poignant scene. The author does not shy away from showing the suffering of the Jewish people as they were inhumanely loaded into cattle cars and swept away to the concentration camps. And of course there is the enduring love between a priest who will abandon his vows for the woman that he loves in a race to find each other again. I am especially interested in novels that explore World War II and its impact on the Italian people, and this novel is one of the best I've read in this regard to date! HIghly, highly, highly recommended!

From Sand and Ash is a beautifully written, poignant historical fiction novel that touches the soul. The story takes place in Italy, during WWII. Eva Rosselli was the love of Angelo Bianco’s life. He was sent to Italy as a child after his mother died. Although he was a Catholic, he grew up with a Jewish family, the Rosselli’s. He also fell in love with their daughter, Eva. It sickened him to see the Jewish people humiliated, robbed and murdered by the Nazi’s. Angelo became a priest to save as many Jews as possible, especially the family he grew up with and loved. Eva’s heart broke, though, when he was ordained. And as much as Angelo wanted to stay faithful to his vows, he had a difficult time resisting Eva’s affections. Her kisses soothed him, but at the same time, tortured his soul. Amy Harmon’s writing is superb. Her story flows effortlessly from one scene to the next. She uses her talent to shine a bright light on the beautiful acts of love done by courageous souls, in the midst of Hitler’s atrocities. This book is haunting, heartwarming, magnificently written and unforgettable. Amy Hammond is a gem of an author, and I’m so glad that I discovered her. Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for my advanced review copy of this book. I loved it.

Completely captivating and unputdownable - a definite fave of 2016! A poignant and touching story of courage, sacrifice, faith, hope and love amidst the turmoil and devastation of WWII. I don't normally read historical romance but I love Ms. Harmon's writing and wanted to take a chance on this story and I am SO glad I did. Ms. Harmon truly knows how to set the scenes, the imagery and created amazing characters I couldn't get enough of. Everything you already know about WWII and the treatment of the Jewish population during this period of time will break your heart as you will be completely immersed in this story. Things we don't know like how members of the Catholic Church hid Jewish families within the churches and convents will open your eyes to the courage and true heart of good people. And within all of this, the love of two people who grew up like family but couldn't be together because of the circumstances will touch your soul as you read this book and hope and pray that nothing will happen to them during these troubling times. Turning page after page, my emotions ran the gamut. I was completely sucked into this story and it was hard to walk away as life continued on around me; my mind kept coming back to this story and I truly felt I was a part of it too, living the moments through Ms. Harmon's magnificent words. Ms. Harmon eloquently tells this beautiful story of true heroism and faith and it is in a word - STUNNING. I liken my reading experience similar to how I felt reading The Bronze Horseman by Paullina Simons. From Sand and Ash is another #epic historical read that I will never, ever forget
