From Within The Firebird's Nest by Sheldon Charles

Most people think the Cold War ended when the Soviet Union collapsed. Though the USSR may have been beaten, their war infrastructure and resentment didn't simply go away. What if there were still secret weapons systems in place and angry old men eager to set them off?

In From within the Firebird's Nest, former KGB official Sergei Kirill Mikhailov revives a secret biological weapon: the Crimson Firebird. His aim is to strike a devastating blow to the United States while pinning the blame on an impressionable young Arab man, thus initiating a global crisis.

Meanwhile, one of Sergei's former colleagues is scrambling to stop the weapon from being deployed and recruits an unlikely team that includes his son (now a banker in Oklahoma), a former Stasi agent, and an American writer named Evan. Together they must shed light on foes hiding in the dark and save the world from unthinkable destruction.

Crypto codes, numbers stations, and sleeper agents all factor into this ultra-high-stakes story of international intrigue. The Cold War gets a little warmer with each page, and all the animosity from the past builds and finally bursts in a shocking conclusion.

From Within the Firebirds Nest is a riveting tale that catapults readers into a world filled with mystery, conspiracy, and unimaginable dangers. The narrative introduces a realm that is laced with tension, uncertainty, and impending doom over the possible detonation of deadly bioweapons. Espionage, crypto-codes, and number stations are all key components in this captivating account — where any wrong or uncalculated move could spell total annihilation! I rarely use the word ‘wow’ but that is exactly the impression this book left me — Wow! From the very first page up to the last, there wasn’t a single dull moment. I would be up at odd hours completely engrossed in the narrative in anticipation of what would happen next. I must say, this is the best book I’ve read all year in its genre. It had the perfect blend of mystery and suspense; there were also a number of plot twists that I totally did not see coming, which sure kept me on the edge of my seat. The pace had a nice steady incline with every passing chapter building up the level of intensity. I could tell there was a lot of research that went into writing the book: the setting created, locations mentioned, organizations and weapons all fit into the narrative that not only created a tale that was enjoyable to read but one that was very convincing as well. Additionally, the three points I usually look for in a novel were all there. The characters were well fleshed out and believable; most characters introduced were central to the plot. The events that occurred were compelling to read. And finally, the author’s storytelling ability was great. I was amazed by how the story wrapped in the end. This was my first Sheldon Charles novel and it certainly won’t be my last. This is a book I’d definitely recommend to anyone who appreciates a high-quality thriller and mystery novel laced with just the right dose of suspense.

A compelling and gripping thriller that will have you on the edge of your seat! Whatever flaws we might identify or frustrations we might feel are trivial in comparison to a reader's pure joy in losing himself/herself in a narrative. When all the elements come together: an intriguing plot, thoughtful, profound themes, complex, troubling, characters, and language that will amaze for its clarity, directness and confidence; we gratefully set all analysis aside and give ourselves up to the sheer magic of a great book. And for me, From Within the Firebird's Nest, is such a book. Author Sheldon Charles weaves an intense tale of mystery and suspense, with intriguing twists and turns that will easily captivate the reader's attention from the beginning. The author paints an 'ultra-high-stakes story of international intrigue' in a very vivid and convincing way. The book description says it all; 'Most people think the Cold War ended when the Soviet Union collapsed. Though the USSR may have been beaten, their war infrastructure and resentment didn’t simply go away. What if there were still secret weapons systems in place and angry old men eager to set them off? In From within the Firebird’s Nest, former KGB official Sergei Kirill Mikhailov revives a secret biological weapon: the Crimson Firebird. Crypto codes, numbers stations, and sleeper agents all factor into this ultra-high-stakes story of international intrigue. The Cold War gets a little warmer with each page, and all the animosity from the past builds and finally bursts in a shocking conclusion. ...' Now, if that’s not enough to whet your appetite, I don’t know what will. But if you want to find out what happens you’ll just have to turn the pages for yourself to find out! But I will say it's well worth the read. It's my first time reading this author and I must say I was very impressed. This captivating and commendable work had me immersed from the beginning. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a compelling and gripping journey. It’s one of those books that come along once in a while that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader. I will say, however, that fans of the mystery, thriller and suspense genre will love having a nibble on this one! If this book is anything to go by, I’ll certainly be looking forward to reading more from Sheldon Charles in the future. I would definitely recommend this book and would love to see it adapted for the Silver Screen. Five stars from me.

I need more from this author! I was really surprised how easily I got sucked into this book. Once it started I couldn't put it down and it makes you wonder if something like this could really happen in the United States. I'm a little disappointed with the ending because I felt it could be a little more detailed and thorough, but all in all, I would highly recommend this to anyone that has curiosity. The subject matter definitely wasn't something I was expecting to enjoy, but this book took me by surprise with every turn of the page. I would definitely say that I wasn't expecting as much action as there is in this. It's a roller coaster, but one well worth the ride if you ask me. I liked how the characters were developed and how they all intertwined with each other, not many stories will do that anymore. It's very hard to find a story that will keep my attention as long as this one did. I'm very pleased and hoping for a sequel.

Even if at the first impression the war/espionage topics approached in Sheldon Charles’ novel seemed to be primarily written for the male audience, I was pleased surprised by the set of well-developed language, characters (here I would especially mention the protagonist – the former KGB official Sergei Kirill Mikhailov) and twisted plot. It got me into the story right from the first pages, even if in general I’m not a big fan of this genre. From the professional manner in which the author wrote “From within the Firebird’s Nest,” by mixing an impressing dose of conspiracy, suspense and intrigue, I suppose that there is a lot of quality research behind it. Due to this, the story resulted into a different and, at the same time captivating, perspective over what the history could have been. I would warmly recommend Sheldon Charles’ book to the Mystery, Thriller & Suspense fans and, simultaneously, to the readers who are craving for a fresh page-turner!
