Overview

In a Culture of Distortions, Discover God-Defined Womanhood and Beauty

In a culture where airbrushed models and career-driven women define beauty and success, it's no wonder we have a distorted view of femininity. Our impossible standards place an incredible burden of stress on the backs of women and girls of all ages, resulting in anxiety, eating disorders, and depression. One question we often forget to ask is this: What is God's design for womanhood?

In Girl Defined, sisters and popular bloggers Kristen Clark and Bethany Beal offer women a countercultural view of beauty, femininity, and self-worth. Based firmly in God's design for their lives, this book helps women rethink what true success and beauty look like. It invites them on a liberating journey toward a radically better vision for femininity that ends with the discovery of the kind of hope, purpose, and fulfillment they've been yearning for.

Girl Defined helps readers

· discover God's design for femininity and his definition of a successful woman
· uncover the secrets of lasting worth, purpose, and fulfillment
· be equipped and empowered to live out a radically better vision for womanhood
· gain personal insight through the chapter-by-chapter study guide

Oh my goodness gracious, I disagreed with almost everything in this book. I find it very hypocritical, to say the least. If women are not supposed to have jobs, why are you able to write a book? How are you allowed to be independent? I would never let a young mind be tainted by this book, it shames women. At times this novel is very literal about the bible while at other times, it is not. It seems God's word is being used to fit their agenda. I cannot believe how low the standards of book writing has fallen.

This was full of condescending, victim shaming and ill informed ignorance. They literally dismissed mental illness (depression) as something trivial. They equated so many things to being "cultured defined" which are completely false. There was a lot of victim blaming and zero empathy for any of the people going through the things they mentioned. Instead it was all judgmental and to make it worse they would compare these people to themselves... they put themselves on a pedestal. After reading this book I was curious to check out more of their stuff to see why these girls have a following and I honestly felt my skin crawl. From YouTube to their blog posts these girls are completely indoctrinated to the point that they contradict themselves and the own bible verses they use. I was given this book as a gift from a family member who knows I've been struggling with faith but after reading this and watching Girl Defined videos I am 100% done with Christianity.

What a wonderful book Kristen and Bethany have written! They have come together to write this book in order share some of their struggles and victories they have encountered along the journey of being a young lady in today's society. It has encouraged my heart and also challenged me in the way I live my life. This book is a must read for girls, young and old alike! It's easy to pick up and read, yet has you thinking of the truths and challenges you've just read for the rest of the day. Highly recommended!!

I read this book with a group of girls this summer and enjoyed it very much! The style is clear and accessible and it was very hard not to devour it in one day. There's also a study guide included with questions at the end of each chapter. I really liked the overall message of the book which is "your worth isn't defined by your beauty, your romantic experience or your career ambitions". I feel like this is a much needed message in a world where girls are told to be pretty, sexually open and climb up the career ladder as high as possible. At first glance, the three pillars of biblical womanhood that Kristen and Bethany explain may look very limiting, but when I thought about them and answered the questions, I found lots of possibilities to live them out! Another thing that I liked was how they focussed on revealing the lies our culture feeds us and how to escape them. There were also many inspiring stories of other ladies. I would really recommend reading this book with a group of friends as it can spark amazing discussions! The only negative points that I have is that some of the questions were a little too simple (the multiple choice ones) and I would have preferred more free questions with a little more space to answer them. Also, the book is clearly addressed at Christian girls and may therefore not appeal to non-Christian girls, which is a little sad because they too could really profit from the book! But I guess this lies in the nature of every Christian book.

"What is the purpose of being a girl?" I don't know about you, but I have struggled with the answer to this simple question. I always knew God had created me to be a girl for a reason, but the deeper purpose of womanhood? "Um, to get married and have kids and keep house, I guess" would have been my answer. Digging deeper into the biblical purpose of being a girl was daunting at best. Been there yourself? Still there? Then read this book. Never really questioned the purpose of being a girl? Then read this book. Our culture has lambasted us with lie after lie of its answer to the question "What is the purpose of being girl?" From the first page until the last, Girl Defined offers a biblical, thought-provoking perspective of womanhood. Kristen and Bethany come alongside sharing personal stories of their search for Truth in a fun and straightforward way. I, personally, have been so blessed, challenged, and encouraged by this book and the real-life example of its authors. Definitely a MUST READ!!! :)

Great for girls of any age! I loved this book. As a teen in America, the constant pressures to be beautiful are high. This book has shown me that beauty comes from God and is such an encouragement!

I received this book as a high school graduation gift from my guidance counselor and I can honestly say it was one of the most helpful books I have ever read. I found myself unable to put it down because of how entrancing and inspiring each and every chapter was. It offers such a refreshing view of femininity and womanhood that I've been looking for for a long time. I've even gifted it to a few of my friends because of just how inspiring it is. If you haven't read this book, you need to!

For the girls who have followed the biblical womanhood theme throughout their life, you might be thinking "Not ANOTHER book on this topic!" But yes, there is. However, this book is like a combination of all the books you've probably read. I like to compare it to Leslie Ludy's Set-Apart Femininity and Anna Sophia and Elizabeth Botkin's So Much More. Here's why. Leslie Ludy is a married woman looking back on her single years. The Botkin sisters are both single looking forward to either more single years or to marriage if the Lord wills. Both perspectives are valid and important today, even though both those books were written 8-10 years ago. However, you have something a little different from Bethany and Kristen. One is single, the other married, and together they compare and combine their experiences, giving a complete picture of biblical womanhood for the immediate present. If you read books that are purely one perspective, you end up focusing on one or the other too much sometimes. But Girl Defined has an amazing balance. Coming from a family of eight (five girls and three boys), these two Texan girls redefine the meaning of womanhood in light of Scripture. They wrote this book because they're passionate about the glory of God and because the Lord provided the opportunity for them to coauthor a book in order to share that glory with the rest of the world. They quote or use the stories from past and present "heroes" of the faith, such as Elisabeth Elliot, C.S. Lewis, Susan Hunt, Mary Kassian, Nancy (Demoss) Wolgemuth, Ian and Larissa Murphy, and Sheila Gregoire. They also use personal examples from their own lives and from the lives of their friends. They discuss the culture and "femininity gone wrong", as well as womanhood and godly living according to Scripture. Ending with a femininity worth fighting for, these girls leave the reader with biblical hope and encouragement. You're not supposed to read this book and then place it on a shelf. You're supposed to read it, pass it along, and then live out the bold, radical, anchored, vigilant, and empowered life as a fierce warrior of Christ. In today's culture of gender and marriage confusion, Kristen and Bethany provide a refreshing reminder of what our lives must look like, whether married or single. Our identity is in Christ, and because of that, we need not fear what any one thinks of what we're doing or what we look like. We will appear different, but that's because we have the end of the story of the world written in our hearts and it compels us to find fulfillment and worth in something other than this world can offer. Definitely a book to read and then buy for a friend. Each chapter also includes a study guide, which I, personally, did not use.

“Girl Defined” by Kristen Clark & Bethany Baird was an excellent book! This book tells us what God’s true design is for women. Women of all ages tend to have a distorted view of femininity. We tend to focus on the outside. We also tend to compare ourselves to other women. This is not what is important. These sisters show us how God intended women to view femininity. Kristen Clark & Bethany Baird do a great job of gearing us, women of all ages, in the right direction. Sometimes we know how we need to act, but don’t do it. We need a nudge in the right direction. These sisters help with the nudge! This book would be great for women of all ages, teenagers through mature adults. They write in a very easy to read format and are very down-to-earth. This book could also be used as a book study. After each chapter is a couple-page study guide with questions to answer. I would definitely recommend this book to all women. I received this book from Baker Books for my honest opinion.

I recently finished reading Girl Defined by Kristen Clark and Bethany Baird. This was an amazing book! It’s difficult to put into words how amazing and impactful this book has been in my life. It has been such a blessing for me to read all about what being a true woman of God really means. I only hope that this book will make as big of an impact on you as it has on me. Not only do Kristen and Bethany go over exactly what a godly woman is and is not, but they also address gender roles and the importance of marriage and motherhood in the eyes of God. This book was extremely challenging for me, and it made me reevaluate a great deal of the thoughts and opinions I had on the role of a woman. Overall, an incredible and thought-provoking book that every Christian woman of God should read! I received this book from the publisher in exchange for my fair and honest review.

This book is AMAZING!!! It is life-changing, and absolutely rock-solid information about a huge variety of topics. Bethany and Kristin write in a very interesting style, and give practical advice as if they were talking with you over a cup of coffee. I could hardly lay it down, and loved hearing all their real life stories and the truth they shared.

Girl Defined is a triumphant testimony of Godly womanhood and what it means to be a woman. In a time when so many are confused about the purpose of being a girl, the definition provided by Kristen and Bethany is both practical and encouraging. My favorite part of the book is the worksheet at the end of each chapter. I love the way this seems to turn the book into more of a dialogue than a lecture, and it helped me to process what I was thinking about what I read instead of just skimming the top and coming up empty-handed. I strongly encourage you to buy this book because the truths these ladies share will truly refresh your spirit!
