Brian Freeman continues to perfect his story telling craft. Suspense was well poised. Characters continue to grow in depth. The wait for each new book is agonizing but well worth the patience it demands.

Once again, Brian Freeman delivers a suspenseful, surprising story. Worth a second read. And a listen. The city of Duluth comes alive with his masterful descriptions. And his characters are spot on. By now, they feel like old friends and I am rooting for them all the way.

Goodbye to The Dead by Brian Freeman is an exciting, entertaining and costly read. Costly because after reading it you, like me, are going to buy every single book that Mr. Freeman has ever written. When I finished I was angry because I had been temporarily exiled from Jonathon Stride and his world as Chief of Detectives for the Duluth, Minnesota police department. This outstanding procedural has all the components that make for an outstanding story. The husband of a well-known and rich doctor is dead and all signs point to the husband’s wife. Jonathon Stride and his squad must resolve conflicting evidence and testimony. The book unfolds beautifully and the denouement is unpredictable and exhilarating. I admit that this was my first exposure to Mr. Freeman and his crew of detectives. Like another well-loved Twin Cities detective, Lucas Davenport, Jonathon Stride and his world is a place I want to be in as much as possible. Hurry up and buy all of Mr. Freeman’s books, you will be glad you did.

I forced myself to hold off reading GOODBYE TO THE DEAD until I could read it while traveling. It was difficult to do this, but it was definitely worth it. It was great to be able to keep turning those pages mile-after-uninterrupted-mile! wOw, what a book! Intermixing different storylines and jumping back and forth in time can often be confusing, but Brian Freeman did an amazingly smooth job of it. For years, we’ve read about Stride’s wife, Cindy, and her hold on Jonathan. In this book, I finally got to “know” her and to learn why she’s had this hold on Stride. I like her and I can see why he loved her, but after this book, I believe that he’ll finally be able to let her go. (Hence the title?) I really admire Serena Dial, his current love, in so many ways, and in my estimation, she deserves Jonny’s top spot! Having lived in Duluth (one of my favorite home towns) and shopped in the Miller Hill Mall, the mass shooting scene in that setting was especially chilling. Brrrrrrrrr … it could happen anywhere, right? As I do with all of mystery books, I kept guessing “Whodunit?” As I read, I would turn back the corner of the page and number each “suspect.” In the end, I was pretty wrong. Oh well. I could go on and on, but GOODBYE TO THE DEAD is definitely one of Brian Freeman’s best!

An energetic, addictive story about the amazing Jonathan Stride. The author has scored another hit with this fast moving, intricately plotted mystery located in the cold, austere reaches of the Duluth area. Even in the summer, the reader senses the vastness of the deep, dark lake surrounding all the evil and conspiracies evolving in this great book! A must read....one of Mr. Freeman's best!

Wow. Took me forever to finish as I always stay with a book until the end. Seems like author couldn't decide if he wanted to write a mystery, a thriller or a love story. Disliked every one of his characters.
