Gravesend initially appealed to me because of it’s links to Brooklyn. The crime blurb is fascinating so I ventured into the seedy, dark, gritty world. The atmosphere is intense, the characters a motley crew are well described but not naturally pleasant. This book does exactly what you would anticipate, it draws you into an existence that is impossible to claw your way out of intact. Mix in an ex-con, an ex-cop a wannabe actress .. there is revenge, murder planning but also caring for family and a whole sensation of social justice. It’s a weird combination but it works, it’s real! The writing allows the reader to experience the area from a safe distance, the desolation and despair is palpable. This also shows that even if you are intent on committing crime it isn’t necessarily as simple as you think .. the human mind is powerful. A crime novel with a difference I enjoyed this. Thanks to the author and publisher for my copy which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
