Grenzen des Ich: Die Verfassung des Subjekts in Goethes Romanen und Erzahlungen

This study uses a remarkable continuity of problems in Goethe’s narrative work to define the ambiguous position he takes up in the broad spectrum of subject discourses. It combines the analytical dimensions of poetology with those of the history of ideas and reveals Goethe’s doubts about the individual as a place for the creation of coherence and sense.
