William W. Muir, III, DVM, MSc, PhD, DACVA, DACVECC, is Chief Medical Officer at The Animal Medical Center in New York and a recently retired professor in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Muir is board certified in both anesthesiology and emergency and critical care. He was a distinguished professor at Ohio State for over 20 years and trained many anesthesiologists in the US and abroad. He also has written hundreds of journal articles, is the recipient of many professional awards, and is the co-author of Elsevier's Handbook of Veterinary Pain Management (with Gaynor) and Equine Anesthesia: Monitoring and Emergency Therapy (with Hubbell).John A.E. Hubbell, DVM, MS, DACVA, is professor of anesthesia in the Department of Veterinary Clinical Science at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. He is a past dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Ohio State and has taught there for more than 20 years. The second edition of this handbook contains an updated text and illustrations on a wide variety of topics pertinent to veterinary anesthesia. Material is presented in an outline format without references. The authors are well respected, board-certified veterinary anesthesiologists who have done an excellent job of condensing a large amount of data into an outline format. The purpose is to clarify, but not oversimplify, information that allows a more comprehensive understanding of the practice of clinical anesthesia. The topic of anesthesia, especially the clinical knowledge necessary to perform such a daunting task, is always timely, and one can never be too secure. As such, a handbook on veterinary anesthesia is of particular value to students who are just learning the concepts as well as to the practitioner who may need to refresh himself on some new technique or to update himself on some new drug. Concepts and practical methods of performing anesthesia are presented in a very concise and organized format. The numerous illustrations, quotes, and tables make for enjoyable, entertaining, and sometimes even thought-provoking reading. This is quite unusual for materials packaged in a handbook format. In addition, this small volume also covers a good deal of practical information on fluid therapy, blood transfusions, respiratory and cardiac emergencies, and euthanasia. The four appendixes provide valuable information to practitioner on sources of drugs and equipment, physical principles of anesthesia, methods of doing humane research of animals, and drug schedules. This is a well-done handbook of veterinary anesthesia and ancillary topics, and I am sure the second edition, as the first,will be valued by both students and graduate veterinarians.

Relevant clinical aspects of anesthesia and related fields in small, large, and exotic patients are covered in this pocket-sized (lab coat) text. The previous edition was published in 1995. According to the authors, the purpose is to provide readily available and useful clinical information for chemical restraint and anesthesia in animals. Anesthesia-related material such as fluid therapy, CPR, euthanasia, and acupuncture is also presented. These are indeed worthy objectives given the needs of large, small, and exotic animal veterinarians for information in rapidly-expanding fields; these objectives have been met by the authors. Although not specifically stated by the authors, I think this book is intended for use by students and practitioners involved with anesthesia in large, small, and exotic (including birds) species. The authors are clinical anesthesiologists from The Ohio State University and are credible authorities on the subject matter. Material presented includes general and local anesthesia for horses, cattle, dogs, cats, goats, and exotic pets. Acid-base evaluations, shock and fluid therapies, cardiopulmonary emergencies, acupuncture, and euthanasia are also described. Material is presented in an easy-to-read outline format supported by line drawings, charts, and black-and-white illustrations. Extremely useful appendixes on drugs and basic principles are presented at the end of the book. There are no obvious shortcomings, except possibly for the progressively increasing size of each edition; species-specific veterinarians may not be interested in information outside of their practice. This is an excellent, reasonably-priced, clinically-related text which should bekept in every practice. Updated and expansive material will be useful to practicing veterinarians and clinical students. Another excellent comparable text would be Thurmon's Essentials of Small Animal Anesthesia and Analgesia (Lippincott, Williams and Wilkins, 1999).

"Once you have got to grips with the point system it facilitates the book's uas as a reference. The handy size (185x112x25cm)makes this a useful addition to the veterinary surgeon's practice library or car glove compartment.
Where this book scores highly are the descriptions of various techniques and general considerations for anaesthesia - for example, fluid administration and treatment of shock. The chapters on respiratory and cardiovascular emergencies include detailed descriptions and excellent illustrations on techniques (for example, tracheotomy ad chest tube placement). The protocol for treatment of cardiopulmonary arrest is described in a straightforward way ina flowchart. Local anaesthiesia is described ind etail, with techniques including regional limb anaesthesia in various species. The diagrams relating to this section are particularly clear.
That this handbook has lived to its fourth incarnation is a testament to its popularity. If you only have room for one anaesthiesia reference book this is an extremely practical and reasonably priced guide to this multifaceted subject.
