Mystery shopper Josie Marcus stumbles onto another murder when a sleazy shoe salesman is killed right after she gets him canned…

Josie finally has her life back on track. Not only is the single mom dating the best (and hottest) barista in the St. Louis suburb of Maplewood, but also her boss just assigned her a coveted gig—mystery shopping the Soft Shoe. The exclusive store is a shoe lover’s dream, but its top seller, Mel Poulaine, is a waking nightmare. His hands-on fascination with feet goes far beyond professional interest. Josie’s scathing report kills Mel’s career…but later that night, someone kills Mel himself.

Josie’s determined to stay out of it. But when Cheryl Malmy, daughter of Josie’s nosiest neighbor, becomes a suspect, Josie’s mom begs her to investigate. She’s shocked by what she uncovers. It turns out “Perfect Cheryl” has more than a few dirty secrets in her closet, drawing Josie deeper into the seedy suburban underbelly. But can she trip up a killer who always seems to be one step ahead?

Throughout her life, Josie Marcus has continually been held up in poor comparison to Cheryl Mueller, a neighbor who Josie¿s mother believes to be living the perfect life. A single mother workig as a mystery shopper, Josie¿s latest assignment to bust a shoe salesman with a foot fetish fails to impress her mom, especially when the creepy shoe lover is murdered. So it¿s a sweet revenge when Josie¿s neighbor Mrs. Mueller comes begging for help when Cheryl is accused of the murder. While Josie would rather avoid whole icky case, a bribery that would have Josie¿s mom heading a gardening committee guilts Josie into investigating just how a shoe salesman like Mel Poulaine could afford his luxurious lifestyle. With a hot romance brewing with the local coffee barista and a daughter who¿s recently traumatized by the death of another teen by a drug overdose, Josie¿s got her hands full. The second in this new series by the author of the Dead-End-Job series, High Heels continues to entertain with its humor and fast pace. It¿s nice to see Josie to finally get some recognition and appreciation from her critical mother, and Josie¿s discovery of the¿unique world of fetishism is hilarious to observe. For a fun read that can be consumed quickly like Godiva chocolates only without the guilt, don¿t miss this entertaining mystery full of laughs and shopping hints.

Josie Marcus is a single mom who lives with her own mother for a reduced rent and has a job she loves even if it doesn¿t pay well. She is a mystery shopper, one of those anonymous customers who visit a store to learn why an employer gets too many complaints. An employer calls the firm Josie works for and her boss assigns her to investigate Mel, a salesman at Soft Shoe. When she follows him to the back room and sees what he is about to do sexually to her shoe she files a bad report and he is fired.---------------- A couple of days later Mel is found murdered at his palatial estate. Mrs. Mueller, Josie¿s nosy neighbor tells her that her daughter Cheryl has been questioned by the police because evidence shows she was there. Her neighbor hires Josie to prove her daughter is innocent. Josie finds Cheryl is a gambling addict, and is part of a slave fetish ring by Mel to make money for women who need extra money. When Mel¿s housekeeper is killed and Cheryl is connected to Mel¿s murder Josie finds her life in danger from a killer who is protecting someone else and doesn¿t want Josie finding out and revealing that secret.--------------- Elaine Viets has written one of the funniest amateur sleuth mysteries to come along in ages. Her protagonist is a thoroughly likeable person, a great mother, daughter and friend who does the right things for the right reasons, even when they make her uncomfortable. There is a lot of action in HIGH HEELS ARE MURDER but the strength and the freshness of the tale lies in the characters who are realistic and believable.--------------- Harriet Klausner
