In this thorough account of her life up through the Clintons' first few months in the White House, it is clear that the First Lady is quite different from most of her predecessors. We don't learn many details of her private life, but we do see how she is similar to many women professionals trying to juggle career and family. Mention Hillary Rodham Clinton's name, and there is no middle road. Either she is perceived as a pushy, arrogant, manipulative bitch or she is seen as an intelligent, poised, determined, competent woman who relishes a challenge. Those readers in the anti-Hillary camp will not find any fuel to flame their fire in this rather adulatory biography by a "Washington Post" writer. The already well known biographical material is all here, beginning with an idyllic childhood in a middle-class, conservative Republican Chicago suburb where in high school Hillary was known as an "overachievers' overachiever." Her days at Wellesley College and Yale Law School, where she met the gregarious southerner "with the Elvis sideburns," are also documented, as is her work on the impeachment-inquiry staff during the Watergate era, before her reluctant move to the Arkansas hinterlands. Many of the comments Radcliffe cites come from magazine and newspaper articles and campaign and commencement speeches, so few, if any, new tidbits emerge. Still, clearly and smoothly written, this is a perfectly acceptable, readable biography in which pragmatic Hillary emerges as a brilliant, capable wife, mother, and attorney who seems to have it all.
