About the Author

With over thirty four million books in print, Jan Brett is one of the nation's foremost author illustrators of children's books. Jan lives in a seacoast town in Massachusetts, close to where she grew up. During the summer her family moves to a home in the Berkshire Hills of Massachusetts.

As a child, Jan Brett decided to be an illustrator and spent many hours reading and drawing. She says, "I remember the special quiet of rainy days when I felt that I could enter the pages of my beautiful picture books. Now I try to recreate that feeling of believing that the imaginary place I'm drawing really exists. The detail in my work helps to convince me, and I hope others as well, that such places might be real."

As a student at the Boston Museum School, she spent hours in the Museum of Fine Arts. "It was overwhelming to see the room-size landscapes and towering stone sculptures, and then moments later to refocus on delicately embroidered kimonos and ancient porcelain," she says. "I'm delighted and surprised when fragments of these beautiful images come back to me in my painting."

Travel is also a constant inspiration. Together with her husband, Joe Hearne, who is a member of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Jan visits many different countries where she researches the architecture and costumes that appear in her work. "From cave paintings to Norwegian sleighs, to Japanese gardens, I study the traditions of the many countries I visit and use them as a starting point for my children's books."

I love all of Jan Brett's books. The illustrations are remarkable, intricate and complex, yet comprehensible for a young reader. Rich stories for a fresh mind.

Jan Brett, famous for her illustrations, once again creates a detailed landscape and characters that depict the Scandinavian countryside. In this specific picture book Rollo is a young troll who still has his tail because he is naughty and will not do his chores. In fact, he hates chores so much that he runs away from home and lives with variety of wildlife trying to find his perfect home. He becomes homesick when releases how much he misses his own home and family, especially now that it is around Christmas time. Similar to Brett¿s other books; each scene is encompassed with a wood like border that includes mini scenes as well. The hand drawn pictures express much detail and the colors reflect a muted wintery mix. As realistic as the illustrations are, they are not eye catching and the story is not one of Brett¿s best because it lacks depth. This book is a must for Jan Brett fans, however, she has others you should acquire first. For ages 4 and up.

Home For Christmas by Jan BrettSummary: A wild little troll runs away from home because he doesn't want to do his chores. Rollo tries living with various woodland animals, but he finds out that there is no place like home, and returns to his family just in time for "the best Christmas ever."Among the animals who take him in are an owl family, a mother bear and two rambunctious cubs, some playful river otters, a hungry lynx and a friendly moose family. What I like about the book: I loved the illustrations. I always love Brett's illustrations. Not only is Home For Christmas full of Brett's trademark illustrations it also contains a valuable lesson on kindness and responsibility. In true picture book fashion, as much of the story is told in the pictures as in the text. We see Rollo's adventures in the main pictures and text while seeing his family's story in the heart shaped vignettes included in the borders of the pages. This is a great holiday picture book for readers of all ages. What I didn't like about the book: LOVED it all!Recommended for pre-school and up.AR Reading Level: Not an AR book as of November 28, 2011Mrs. Archer's rating: 5 of 5! I have already added this to my next book order for the school library.

As a retired second grade teacher, Jan Brett was and continues to be one of my favorite children's authors. The children were always mesmerized by the stories and illustrations as the richly and intricately illustrated margins made way for excited predctions. I now have a three-year old granddaughter who has fallen under Jan Brett's spell and anticipates all her books! I definitely recommend Jan Brett books for all parents...from board books on...There are many accompanying activities and lots of great ideas on her website.
