About the Author

Steve Jenkins has written and illustrated nearly twenty picture books for young readers, including the Caldecott Honor-winning What Do You Do with a Tail Like This? Inset mapsþglobal and regionalþand measurement charts (often using humans and the Empire State Building for scale) allow these extremes to make geographical and quantitative sense. As in many such collections, some of the material is contestable; Jenkins cites a spot on Mount Washington, in New Hampshire, as the windiest place, with winds of 231 m.p.h., while the Guam typhoon of 1997 had winds of 236 m.p.h. Also, some sources peg Mount Everest to be even higher than this text states: 29,108 feet as opposed to 29,028. Such quibbling only makes the book more valuable, inspiring readers to do further research after they've been visually seduced. (Picture book. 4-8)
