I'd had the previous title of this book - "Under The Influence; How Christianity Changed the World" - for many years always meaning to read it. I finally did and now I kick myself for not reading it sooner. Author Schmidt lays out the case very well that Christianity literally did change the world in how mankind approached everything in society - religion in general, childbearing/rearing, caring for the sick, education and on and on and on. Schmidt specifies how Christianity's viewpoint on things (with scriptural references) differed from the ancient pagan ways thru Greco-Roman society (specifically what they had been up to time of Christ) and how it's viewpoints led to many, many philosophies, practices, institutions etc that are in existence to this day (where we see these in society today). A very rational, analytical approach and as I said, a very well presented work.

If you are puzzled as to why America and the countries of Europe are sometimes called the "Christian nations", this is the book to read. It will also help you to understand why those who criticize Christianity as patriarchal and/or demeaning to women could not be more wrong. We tend to look upon the Greeks and Romans as our intellectual and cultural forebears, but Schmidt explains why our convictions that all people are equal and all children entitled to an education, had to come from somewhere else. He also examines in depth the roots of Western education, economics, law, science, medicine, music and the arts, as well as human rights activism. This is a book that will provoke much thought and give you new insight into many of the "hot button" topics of our time.

Fantastic. This book should be read by every Christian and every scholar. Western civilization and the world has been changed as a result of Christianity and this book tells in detail why that is true. In these days of the New Atheists assault on Christianity and the church this is an essential antidote to Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens ("How Religion Spoils Everything"). Schmidt's book is chock full of reliable historical information on how Christianity has been the reason for all the good things in civilization.
