How Nature Healed a Broken Soul: An Autobiography

In this honest, passionate autobiography, Penny James welcomes you to experience her transition from a young beauty contest winner in Colorado to a world-renowned fashion model whose career spanned eleven years with the Wilhelmina & Ford agencies. Penny appeared on five Playboy covers, refusing to do a centerfold. She was part of the 1960s and 1970s party scenes in Chicago and New York City.

During the course of a difficult marriage and later divorce from her husband of twenty years, Penny became an alcoholic with dangerous addiction and self-esteem challenges. Her healing journey began in AA, where she developed a deep relationship with God. In the eighties, the author purchased a 100-year-old farmhouse in Pennsylvania, where she communed with wildlife and nature, ultimately growing into the wise, enlightened woman who wrote this story - her own story - to move, inspire and, possibly, save others.

Penny's faith in God was fierce and unwavering; it was her strength on her darkest days. She believed that we are ALL connected on God's earth. A favorite expression she spoke often was, "zero degrees of separation."

Penny James passed away on April 11, 2019. Her sister's promise on Penny's death bed was to finish this book and get it published. This precious gift to the world is part of Penny's beautiful legacy.

About the Author

Penny James was born in Colorado. As a young child, she spent every summer on a ranch looking out on the Sangre de Christo Mountains, where she had a front row seat viewing wild animals that would wander past the windows of her grandmother's homestead. Love of nature and a passion for animals never left her. She became Miss Colorado in 1962 and later enjoyed a modeling career spanning 11 years with both Wilhelmina and Eileen Ford in New York City. Before she passed away in 2019, Penny designed beds made from trees and had a gallery in Shohola, Pennsylvania, dedicated to people and animals that need help.
