This is a multiauthored review of the various disorders that lead to hyperthermia and hypermetabolism. They include exertional heatstroke and malignant hyperpyrexia, hypermetabolism from a wide variety of drugs, and hypermetabolic endocrine disorders. The authors are from Europe and North America and are eminent authorities in their fields. The purpose is to provide an overview of this increasingly important subject. In a world that is undergoing global warming and with people who are becoming more and more physically active—look at the numbers who run in big city marathons, for example—heat stress and heatstroke are going to be seen more and more. The authors have no preface to set the scene but leave it to the reader to draw inference as to importance of the subject and how it all ties together. This book should be of interest to a wide range of doctors, including family doctors and internists, endocrinologists, anesthesiologists, sports medicine and military medical personnel, and doctors associated with large industries, such as mining, and where heavy outdoor manual labor occurs in hot climates. This is a no-nonsense, no preface kind of a book—all meat and potatoes. There is a good and very up-to-date bibliography and an adequate index. Although this book serves only meat and potatoes, there are plenty of those excellently presented with little overlap and the highest quality reviews. Malignant hyperpyrexia is of special interest to anesthesiologists, heatstroke to a different group, and endocrine-related hypermetabolism to endocrinologists. But all should meet reading the chapter on drug overdose, drug abuse, and hypermetabolism. It is an excellent review ofa topic of general importance. I strongly recommend this book to all specialists in the fields I have mentioned and to libraries who serve them.
