A friendly lion is hiding within four scenes, and it’s the job of readers to locate him by pulling and pushing on sliders. Nichols’s retro-style images in shades of blue, orange, and minty green show the lion concealed beneath a tablecloth at the restaurant where a patron is being served fish; pushing the slider makes his head peek out over the book’s edge. In the costume store, the lion is dressed as a king; his face slides into a die-cut space beneath the crown. In the library, the lion’s head pops up above the stacks, and at the beauty parlor, his blond, shaggy mane is being dried as the stylist attends to another customer. The lion is gentle—mostly. In a final spread, the animal appears without any accoutrements; pulling on the slider makes the lion’s mouth open wide, lending him just a touch of wildness.
