In the Stillness: A Spiritual Response to Ritual Abuse
Do you know a woman born into a family that practiced torture, brainwashing, and sexual exploitation of its own children? Don't say "No" too quickly. Survivors of ritual abuse rarely talk about their experiences or their recovery. In the Stillness: A Spiritual Response to Ritual Abuse is the story of one woman's perilous escape and triumph over brutal abuse by her powerful family—mind control, soul murder, ritual desecration, and sexual exploitation. The memoir of educator Barbara Barringer, as told to her lifelong friend in recovery Cath C., is much more than a horror story. It is a heart-warming testimony to the enduring hope and creativity of every child.

About the Author

Cath C. has been a member of Twelve Step programs for twenty-five years. Cath became acquainted with ritual abuse when she met Barbara B. more than two decades ago in a psychiatric program for women with histories of sexual abuse. While Cath worked on incest issues, she watched Barbara and others in the program struggle with more severe, past trauma. With Barbara’s cooperation she wrote the brutal story of Barbara’s childhood experiences, the frightening period of self-exile as an adult who knew too much, and the miracle of Barbara's remarkable spiritual growth. Cath took pains not to focus on the horror of Barbara’s experience but to emphasize recovery and spirituality. Cath admired and shared Barbara’s lifelong commitment to the education of children and her fierce belief in the dignity, creativity, and sanctity of every child. This book embodies not only Barbara’s triumph over ritual abuse but Cath’s determination to break the silence on behalf of her friend. It is Cath's fervent desire that good people throughout the country and beyond will build their knowledge of the heinous crimes represented by ritual abuse and extend their caring and support to victims and survivors.
