Overview

From New York Times best-selling author Mary Balogh comes the first novel in the Horsemen trilogy, a scandalous romance of yearning passion and dangerous desires....

In the country visiting his twin brother, Viscount Rawleigh longs for a little diversion, and beautiful young widow Catherine Winters seems like easy prey. But Rex's target is a lady of virtue, and when she roundly rejects his improper proposal to become his mistress, Rex finds himself faced with a delectable challenge.

Catherine knows she must fight the indecent feelings the viscount arouses within her - feelings that bring to life a past she had sought to escape - even as the handsome lord refuses to relent in his amorous attentions. But even though she knows one kiss could bring her to ruin, temptation proves an insurmountable foe - and Catherine cannot ignore the beating of her treacherous heart....

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly

Although Balogh's (Heartless) seamless, fairy-tale Regency lacks some of the complexity and period detail of her previous books, it nonetheless engages the reader with sharply drawn, likable characters. Lady Catherine Winsmore, a heroine of quiet courage, refused a forced marriage when rape left her with an illegitimate child. Exiled by her family, she poses as a young widow, Mrs. Catherine Winters. An innocent smile brings the unwelcome advances of another rake, the Viscount Rawleigh, Rex Adams. Rather than suffer from new scandal she accepts a loveless marriage to Rex. There are few twists or real subplots, and Catherine's problems aren't so much resolved as magically waved away by Rex. But what makes this book touching is its bittersweet portrayal of a victim wronged by her attacker and by society, and the compassion and trust that eventually redeem two lives. (Jan.)
