Overview

Flutist Paul Horn pioneered the concept of natural echo recordings with a series of albums recorded in spaces like the Taj Mahal that offer phenomenal echo chambers. On this album, however, Horn and R. Carlos Nakai, who plays the native American flute, take on a more challenging location -- the rock wall canyons of Arizona's Monument Valley. It is almost impossible to successfully record the richness of echoes in such an outdoor environment. But they've done it. The tones of their respective flutes complement each other respectfully. Their meditative melodies seem to explore the shape and breath of the canyon. Even interlopers have a role: Winds try to get the upper hand, thunder interrupts with applause, and a brazen raven cackles. These natural elements add texture and dimension, but this deeply intuitive recording is not just about mining the acoustics of a beautiful canyon. It's also the improvisations themselves that carry the album. This deeply intuitive recording is not just about getting inside of some canyon, but also inside of the self. Horn and Nakai contribute theirs, and they invite you to join them.
