The third part of the book focuses on therapeutic interventions for Internet addiction. The fourth part of the present book is an extension to the first edition and deals with a new emerging potential disorderrelated to Internet addiction – smartphone addiction.

Finally, it addresses the rising tide of issues involving smartphone addiction. An update of the 2015 first edition, this book is part of the Studies in Neuroscience, Psychology and Behavioral Economics series.
Purpose: The purpose of this second edition is to provide "further and in-depth insight into theoretical models dealing with internet addiction" and present new therapeutic approaches.
Audience: The intended audience is practitioners, scientists, and students. The two editors are from Germany and the contributors represent countries around the world.
Features: A history of internet addiction begins the book. Research findings on internet addiction were first presented in 1996. At that time, the DSM-IV criteria for pathological gambling were adapted for internet addiction. An internet addiction questionnaire was developed in 1998, and the Internet Addiction Test was published in 2004, with good psychometric properties (i.e. validity and reliability). Part II discusses neuroscientific findings related to internet addiction. Research shows that internet addiction disorder is related to neuroanatomical changes in the frontal cortex, thalamus, and other brain areas and has similar cognitive and emotional dysfunction as drug addiction. Internet addiction is also correlated with the dopaminergic, serotonergic, and cholinergic systems, and the activation of the autonomic nervous system in internet addiction is similar to what is seen in drug addiction. Part III explores therapeutic interventions and public policy, and discusses psychoinformatics, a computer science method that can be used in the assessment and therapy of individuals suffering from internet addiction. As in most psychological disorders, both pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy can prove helpful for internet addiction. Researchers in South Korea have found that parental and family counseling are integral parts of a comprehensive plan. A study in Germany is described that uses the COMPASS model, which combines self-management therapy, reactance research, motivational interviewing, and solution-focused therapy. Germany has also been using cognitive-behavioral and psychodynamic approaches. Research on smartphone use is just in its infancy, although its distractibility component has long been known. Excessive smartphone use is associated with increased stress. The book is very readable and contains colorful figures and tables, which lend clarity. It includes an appendix with neuroanatomical pictures and a brief glossary of terms.
Assessment: This book is good at presenting research findings underlying internet addiction while providing both theoretical models and therapeutic interventions. The second edition is justified in light of the dramatic increase in research in the past few years.
