This Introduction to the New Testament by Raymond Brown is a great resource. I first used it in an introductory course on the New Testament while I was in theology studies and it has remained with me since then. It is a well-written and researched book, but was not 'over my head' with theological jargon. Though written from a Roman Catholic perspective, I think that anyone might find it helpful for learning more about the New Testament.

Raymond Brown was one of the most popular commentators on scripture. This s a fine, middle-of-the-road guide to reading the New Testament. The writing is clear. The book is helpful. The chapters are just long enough to explore topics and just short enough not to overwhelm lay readers like me. I was schooled in a little more radical background for New Testament studies and Professor Brown helped me moderate my reading a bit. He was a Catholic priest who taught for decades at one of the great American seminaries with a largely Protestant and progressive history. This is a great addition to both church and personal libraries. The price is modest. The resources are large. The design and quality of the book are outstanding.
