Introduction to Veterinary Pathology, Third Edition, is constructed for the beginning student in veterinary pathology, to introduce new scientific information on mechanisms of general tissue injury into the language of medicine. Norman F. Cheville, DVM, PhD, is Professor Emeritus of Veterinary Pathology at Iowa State University. Previously, he was Chair of the Department of Veterinary Pathology and Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, and Chief of Pathology at the National Animal Disease Center.

This is a concise textbook of general comparative pathology. There are 105 tables, 50 line illustrations, and 143 photographs included. Scattered throughout the text are ""focus"" boxes that illustrate and explain important concepts. The first edition was published in 1988. The purpose is to introduce veterinary medical students to the principles and language of pathology. The book serves as a useful guide to the subject matter, but is best accompanied by lectures that synthesize individual topics into a cohesive whole. This book is aimed at veterinary professional students. The concepts and principles are not species specific. Residents in both medicine and pathology will find this book useful in reviewing the principles of general pathology. The editor is an internationally known and well-respected figure in veterinary pathology. Injury and the animal's response to injury are covered, including inflammation, healing, immunopathology, fluid balance and blood disorders, neoplasia, and genetic diseases. The strength of this book is the presentation of concepts and principles in a simplified format, complete with practical examples and illustrations. Editing has been somewhat lax. For example, on page 266 pathogenesis is used where parthogenesis is indicated. On page 3, it is not mentioned that steroid hepatopathy is uniquely a canine disorder. The update of this basic textbook is long overdue and welcome. Many of the figures, tables, and focus boxes have been retained from the first edition. The book has been shortened by approximately 200 pages. There has been extensive reorganization and addition of more current mechanistic descriptions. Many basic principles have notchanged and are left intact from the first edition without dwelling on excessive detail. The editor delivers basic information in a user-friendly format that forms the basis for understanding the discipline of pathology and its importance to the practice of medicine. The other quality book in this field, Slauson's Mechanisms of Disease: A Textbook of Comparative General Pathology (Mosby-Year Book, Inc., 1990) is currently being revised.

A textbook for a graduate or undergraduate course introducing pathology to veterinarians or exposing students of pathology to comparative medicine. Cheville (veterinary pathology, Iowa State U.) explains the new scientific information on mechanisms of general tissue injury in the language of both anatomic and clinical pathology. He deals almost exclusively with diseases of vertebrate animals, mentioning diseases of humans or invertebrates only when they provide useful models for basic processes.
