Invented in the 1630s by English men and women fleeing religious tyranny in the Massachusetts Bay Colony, Rhode Island became an unwanted interloper, the bastard of New England. Its settlers had neither the Crown’s consent nor Boston’s blessing to form new towns, but those banished from the Bay Colony had to find someplace to live where they could worship God without fear of retribution.
