Though J. Vernon McGee passed away in the 80s, his Thru-the-Bible series is quite marvelous in helping baby Christians (newbies) or people who just want to have a deeper than surface level understanding of God's Word. This is a transcript of a 5-year journey through the Bible and it is a wonderful journey. There are some areas I will dispute with him on (like his belief in cessasationalism--the belief that all miracles stopped at the point when the Bible was finished being written). I, as well as many of my friends, have experienced God's miracles in our lives however, that said, don't miss this series! It is written in an easy to understand manner designed, as they say, with the cookies on the bottom shelf for easy access. You will be amazed at how the whole Word is related--all pointing to the coming of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. You will be in awe as he shares some of the deep background in the poetry, the prophecies, the history and the Gospels and letters (epistles). Fabulous stuff! Do what I'm doing. Read a chapter of the Bible, then read Vernon's take on that chapter. This is a most enlightening way to go through the Bible. Besides Vernon's belief in cessastionalism, he also does not believe that dreams today can be supernatural in origin (like being able to receive a message from God while you are sleeping). This has happened to me and others more times than we can count so I must disagree with his stand on that as well. But there is too much wonderful insight into God's Word to pass this series by. The Book of Acts was never finished. It is still happening today. Know the truth and be free from depressing belief systems so prevalent in the world today. Study God's Word and find joy and wisdom.
