Jade is the lifeblood of the island of Kekon. It has been mined, traded, stolen, and killed for -- and for centuries, honorable Green Bone warriors like the Kaul family have used it to enhance their magical abilities and defend the island from foreign invasion.

Now, the war is over and a new generation of Kauls vies for control of Kekon's bustling capital city. They care about nothing but protecting their own, cornering the jade market, and defending the districts under their protection. Ancient tradition has little place in this rapidly changing nation.

When a powerful new drug emerges that lets anyone -- even foreigners -- wield jade, the simmering tension between the Kauls and the rival Ayt family erupts into open violence. The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones -- from their grandest patriarch to the lowliest motorcycle runner on the streets -- and of Kekon itself.

Jade City is the first novel in an epic trilogy about family, honor, and those who live and die by the ancient laws of blood and jade.

I was hesitant to pick up Jade City. Fantasy, especially high/epic fantasy (whether MG, YA, or Adult), is not my preferred genre. The made-up terms and complex worldbuilding often go over my head and I can never properly access the story. But I couldn't get Jade City's premise out of my head. It sounded exactly like my cup of tea - a family saga with magic roiling through an Asian-inspired metropolis like our own, clan politics, a warrior class. Not to mention that formidable green and black cover. It exudes power. I should learn to trust my gut more often. I rarely have a magnetic attraction to something, and when I do, it's for a reason I can't understand until I give myself over to it. Jade City is absolutely fantastic, and once you're hooked, that's it. You'll find yourself flying through its pages. I am SO excited for Jade War and to see how the Kaul family's narrative will continue to unfold after that ending.

This is a masterfully crafted book. Fonda Lee has created an intricate alternative world that feels inherently real while being completely new. The characters are multi-dimensional, complicated, rounded beings, and the world and its people are so deftly crafted that the high concept - jade is a bioreactive element that heightens the senses and powers of those who possess it - quickly seems as fundamentally true as the law of gravity. Plus the breathless, kick-ass action is unparalleled. Can't wait to buy the next installment in this saga.

"Family is duty. Magic is power. Honor is everything". This book seemed to have all the elements I absolutely adore in a book - an alternative world, ancient customs, family, conflict, and honour. It sounded like my cup of tea and although I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would it is still a fantastic read. Okay, let's begin with the positives - I was taken in from the opening chapter and it had me in its grip, the storyline was excellent and I liked the writing style which made it very easy to get into. The worldbuilding is simply fantastic and I thoroughly enjoyed the setting and the use of ancient laws which both form a substantial part of the plot. The characterisation is stunning too, the characters are vivid and memorable and pique your interest from the first couple of pages. The one issue I had that prevented me from awarding a full five-stars is the fact that the book frequently switches between multiple POV and as a result becomes slightly convoluted and confusing. This did affect my reading experience as it made it a tad difficult to keep everything straight. It also starts off a little pedestrian and I wondered when something exciting was going to happen. Luckily, it did pick up pace. I love that this is a trilogy and cannot wait to delve into the second offering from Lee. I was not familiar with Lee before this novel but I will be checking out her past titles and enjoying those until the next one arrives. This is a magical fantasy and I am eager to see how the world and ideas develop in book two. Many thanks to Orbit for an ARC. I was not required to post a review and all thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

I wouldn't say this book started slowly -at alk- but it just keeps getting better and better as you go. The pace isn't breakneck, but it is relentless, with no wasted scenes and consistently great characters managing worsening problems. The world building is amazing, but also seem less and you don't realize how much there is until you try and explain it to someone else. I rarely give five stars - only to one or two books a year maybe - but this one deserves them all.

I really enjoyed reading this; it's a magically-enhanced gang war, and a family drama, with the flawed relationships at its core mirrored by the blood shed on the streets. I'd love to read more of this, even as it stands perfectly well on its own.

This book has bewitched me. It is like an epic fantasy series meets gang conflicts mixed with magical jade. What is there more to love? I almost felt like this book was written with me in mind. At first I was in love with the rich history and world building that Lee guides us through. It is lush, detailed, full of jade and secrets. In my three pages of notes I have so many mentions of how amazing and immersive the world is. Recently I have been reading some fantasy where I had question, but this book gives it all to me. It even has a few short chapters with little legends/tales that the characters know. But soon I was falling in love with the characters - even the side ones. I fell straight in love with Shae, but even the ones who were not my instant favorites like Bero and Hilo I found myself admiring. And don't even get me started on what I'd do for Anden. But like even the 'villains' I found entirely compelling. The plot was masterful and complex and I am so unworthy to even describe it. But it will take you on a wild ride that shows you a city on the border of change - between progress and tradition. The tide will rip the city apart and even the families within as a new wind blows through. Do yourself a favor. If you are interested in some FANTASTIC adult fantasy, read this.
