Because while there is good info in this book,it is more about Chip dealing with white guilt and furthering the misconception of race in the south as perceived by the new england and northern va elitests. While he states that he comes to appreciate his southern kin his continous use of racial epithets in regards to them is disgusting. He claims a resolution to his bigotry, but the hate he hows in the book displays that fact as untrue. I would have liked to have seen more info on the strides of this family in the US, and find it sad that ten years of research culminated in an essay written by an elitest to state that he believes he has overcome his bigotry and intolerance. Unfortunately saying something and doing otherwise do not make it true.
