Overview

Romance readers have taken to Maggie Brendan's softer romantic style that perfectly captures life on the American frontier, introducing them to rugged, independent souls and their inner spiritual struggles, and the quest for love that makes for a satisfying read every time. Set in 1890s Montana, The Jewel of His Heart finds Juliana drawn to a handsome, gentle sheepherder—but sparks fly when he considers mining, the occupation that lured her father away from his family. Both Josh and Juliana must make a choice—the world's riches and promises, or the eternal value of love.

Praise for Maggie Brendan's first book:

"You won't want to set this book down."—Romantic Times, 4½-star review

"This gentle romance set among the rugged beauty of the Colorado foothills will warm readers' hearts."—Kim Vogel Sawyer

One thing I enjoyed about Maggie Brendan's first book (No Place for a Lady) was that I could share it with the teenage girls in my group at church, their moms, or even my own mom -- and they would all enjoy it. The same is true for Jewel of His Heart. Brendan's stories might not be as intense as some others and there aren't usually as many plots and subplots, but that's part of their appeal. Jewel is a sweet story of how people come to terms with their pasts, learn to trust each other, and realize what the most important things in life really are. And those are lessons we all need to learn or be reminded of! I'm looking forward to the conclusion of the series in 2010.

Maggie Brendan used details in such a way as to take me to 1890's Montana every time I opened this book. The small town and the people in it were real to me. Then being out on the prairie with Josh and Andy, I could feel the wind and see the miles of grass and hear the sheep. Another thing I enjoyed was a heroine in that day having such an interesting job which she really enjoyed. This book was a wonderful vacation to somewhere I never even imagined going!

When I saw this book I instantly fell in love with the cover! It's so beautiful. I truly enjoyed Brendan's descriptions of Montanta and the town in which the story takes place. In addition to the main characters, I loved the rest of the townspeople and want to know more about all of them. I'm glad that although this book is part of a series, it is a stand alone book that does not have to be read in order. I can't wait for book 3 to come out!

I read Maggie's first novel, No Place for A Lady and have been looking forward to reading Josh's story for a while. The Jewel of His Heart did not disappoint, right from the start I was hooked. There was a lot that happened to both Juliana and Josh that made me wander what more could go wrong! They, along with their faith however made it through...with a little help from Shebe the dog on the cover. Another character who was introduced who I really learned to like was Wes...I wonder what will happen with him? I can't wait to see what happens to April too...I surely hope gets reformed...she's a brat! This was a good story with a nice happy ending! I'll be looking for Book 3 soon!!! I reviewed this book as a part of Revell's blog tour.

I will admit that the story had a bit of a slow start. But when it took off, you had no choice but to follow. A wonderful romance that has enough drama and adventure to almost mirror real life.

Maggie Brendan's characters make this novel stand out among the rest of the historical romance genre. The hero and heroine fast become your friends, and the supporting cast cries out for their stories to be told. Although it follows some of the predictable paths romances do, paradoxically, Brendan weaves in enough of her unique style to keep it unpredictable. I didn't read the first book in the Heart of the West series, but I'm going to buy it, and I'm looking forward to the third book in the series. This from a reviewer who is not a fan of historical romances. If you are, you'll love it. If like me, you' aren't, you'll still love it. Novel Reviews and I give it a high recommendation.

I love the story as it sprang to life on the pages. Such description so as to make you feel where the characters were and what the were experiencing.

Originally, in reading the first book in the Hearts of the West Series I had to say: Having a plot line that starts and grows with tragedy, this is a novel that grabs your heart and makes you silently or even sometimes verbally cheer on the heroine to succeed at her current goal. Maggie Brendan has done well with her first novel and I definitely look forward to more. This is easily one of those stories where you are screaming for the characters to see what you as a reader are seeing. There are times where I thought something would come out differently, but with the story coming to a close I could not have imagined anything better than the way it was itself. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!!My review of the second in the series, The Jewel of His Heart: The romantic prose of Maggie Brendan is very visual and a reader can easily imagine what it was in Montana in the late period of the 1800s. The writing and characterization of the protagonist was good, I could tell, because they aggravated me to no end with the decisions and flip flops of emotions. A slight thing that threw me was some of the serious events that occurred in the lives of our main characters and how quickly the story just seemed to move forward without much time for the characters much less a reader to reflect. This is a sequel in continuing the life of main character Josh McBride from No Place for a Lady yet this story completely holds it's own as a stand-alone. Once a cattle-rancher's son, McBride is attempting to make his own as a sheepherder. The details of the life are intriguing and as a reader going along for the journey one routes for Josh to succeed. Juliana Brady has had it rough and has her pride, but with each day as she grows closer to Christ she learns a bit more of what He has in store. I definitely plan to read more titles to come from Maggie Brendan. This was a great story, I just did not personally mesh with the character's personalities and felt they were quick to jump and assume, but then that just hits a nerve. The romance is vivid and chill bumps present, this is one to read with imagination and time to reflect the lessons within as well as revel in the kisses stolen.
