Varina Denman has once again penned a gritty, raw novel of a small town in Texas, and of secrets that have lain buried for years. I didn't care for the main characters at first, and wondered if I want to continue reading a book about an ex-con and a woman who suffers from bouts of depression and seemingly has zero personality. Having remembered how good Justified was, I continued on and was glad I did. These were real people, not fake, perfect storybook characters...who needed God's redemption, inner healing, and new beginnings. The romance was captivating as was the suspense element. Jilted is a very well written novel I highly recommend!

Jilted was a beautiful conclusion to the Mended Hearts series. It was wonderful to revisit all of the folks in smalltown, Trapp, Texas.
Lynda Turner finally has her story told from her perspective. She has struggled with depression ever her husband had abandoned her and their young daughter fifteen years ago. Her character is very real that many readers will be able to relate to. She’s been through so much during her that she hasn’t truly lived it.
Well, that is until ex-convict, Clyde Felton, starts showing an interest in her. I also really enjoyed having Clyde in the story and getting to learn more about him.
However, events occur that dredge up the past that she will have to face. Lynda will have to fight for her emotional stability and trade a life of shame for the light of love.
Jilted tells of a woman who has lost the joy of living, a man determined to draw her back toward happiness, and a town that must—once and for all—leave the past where it belongs. It is a gentle reminder that all things can work together for good.
This is not a light fluffy read because we do deal with topics such as depression, anxiety, and grief. However, Denman showcases a realistic story of characters going through some very real life trials while shining the hope of Jesus Christ. This story ended well.
Denman does a wonderful job of showing us small-town prejudices, a church’s unjustness, and depression, it is both entertaining while keeping it entertaining at the same time. You will cry, laugh, cheer, and all of the other feels.
I absolutely loved Lynda and Clyde. They make a wonderfully cute couple even though they both have a long road of healing ahead of them. The other characters made it special as well. They become like friends and family and they were fun to see appear throughout the book.
It’s also fast-paced. I found myself quickly flying to the pages until I found myself at the very end.
It also has a mystery feel to it. As events develop, more and more questions arise as to what really happen. I thought that was a fun added twist to the story. I loved being able to figure out what possibly happened only to find out I was wrong! Mrs. Denman definitely keeps you on your toes which is an added plus.
I highly recommend it!

I have read every book in this series. The first book captured me. Varina’s style of writing just speaks to my heart and her characters are so real.
I loved this series so much I purchased this book to read because I missed the chance to get a review copy, that should say a lot:)
So, this book does start a bit slow but even saying that there was something about it that pulled me in.
I really didn’t like Lynda in the first book, I thought she was a horrible mother but as I read the second book I began to like her more and finally getting to this one I was ready to hear her story. It is a bit depressing but Lynda deals with depression so feeling that way while reading it makes sense, we are in her mind.
Clyde is a wonderful, strong hero. I adored him and only wanted the best of him. He is so patient with Lynda.
I love this feeling of hope I found as I read, that Lynda would eventually come to see Jesus loved her and He never left her even though these other men had.
I think if this is the first book in the series you have read you might not enjoy it as much because you don’t know the other characters and what has transpired before, but if you have read the other two you will love meeting up with the people of Trapp, Texas again.

Trapp Texas felt like a trap to Lynda Turner & Clyde Felton’s past, one that held them back from all that was good and right. A town not easily forgiving—if at all—holding onto grudges like a vise grip, and judging as harshly as any crocked courtroom. But God has more for the town and the people who call it their home, if they would but open up to it!
A very poignant & emotionally packed story of love, forgiveness (even of one’s own self), the ability to face one’s past & move on and lessons each member of this small town will learn—eventually. As though it’s reluctance to is held in deep-rooted lies and blinded eyes to the truth. Past things begin to come to light, long held misconceptions begin to clear up, and things begin to be made new—beauty for ashes as scripture says. A truly moving story, one that stirs the heart and soul deep within and leaves little room for anything other than God’s love, forgiveness, grace & mercy!
Since I didn’t read the first two books in this series (Jaded & Justified), I didn’t have the backdrop of the towns history or of the depth of character. But I was able to figure out who was who & what was what pretty quick and had a very hard time putting this down. It gripped me, leaving me breathless at times, laughing at others and yet still pulling on my heart-strings. I could relate in a lot of ways to Lynda, which made the story more personal and real. I could see myself doing, saying or thinking the same things she did. Most importantly, God spoke to me, using the authors words to remind me of the beauty for ashes story in my own life—and making me fall in love with my Creator God even more! I’ll definitely be going back to read the first two books in the Mended Hearts series and anticipating what God will speak to my heart through them!

I knew I was going to love Jilted … if for no other reason than this: everything that Varina Denman writes is framed in her pitch-perfect writing voice and compelling characters. She has a masterful sense of setting, and each book in this series has been even better than the last.
I totally called it. Jilted is all of those things and so much more.
Varina does such a fabulous job with every element of her books – characters, setting, and voice. Her people come alive and feel like neighbors and friends (me and Clyde. BFFs. don’t forget.) and even enemies. I want to plop down on a diner stool with Ruthie and Fawn and convince Dixie to let Lynda to take a break (“ten minutes!”) so we can all pie and chat for a while. I want to watch a football game on the hood of Clyde’s car with him and Lynda (though that might get a bit crowded), and I so desperately want to meet Blue and Gray. The town of Trapp, Texas settles around you in vivid technicolor to the point that you swear you feel the hot wind blowing against your face and even some gritty dust against your eyelids. And Varina’s writing voice is so delightfully unique and poetic without being over the top. She expresses herself so beautifully (“She laughed through the word, and it became a light shush that floated on the breeze and bounced around my shoulders.”) and I have always found her alternating first-third perspective to be profoundly striking in both tone and dimension.
Bottom Line: Jilted brings the Mended Hearts series to an emotional conclusion with layered characters, tender passion, bits of humor, and even a dash of mystery. It's one of those books that touches the deepest parts of its characters - and you, in the process - and leaves you smiling even through the sheen of tears. It casts a realistic look at small town life, at depression, at church hurt ... without glossing over it and without unnecessary/unbelievable melodrama. Most importantly, it etches a beautifully sweet message on our hearts. That it doesn't matter whether we are glass-half-full or glass-half-empty kind of people. What matters is that God stands there, with open arms, waiting to refill our glass from His bottomless pitcher. If we let Him. And if/when we do, we find that our glass isn't filled with material stuff, not even "fairy tales and happy endings". Instead, He fills out with hope... and peace... and joy ... and love... and people. All the important things.

Can I just say how wonderful this Mended Heart series is? I’m truly impressed because it had me hooked the whole series. I can’t say I’m one to grab a contemporary set novel in a small town, but I enjoyed each story so much and was sad when I finished the last page because no more Trapp, Texas! Plus, I really loved that Varina tackled issues and hard topics in each story. I love true to life stories like this.
While this can be enjoyed all on it’s own as a stand alone, I have to say I highly recommend reading the whole series. Why? Because it makes each story more deeply felt and if there’s anything I love about a book, it’s getting completely lost in it. I also thought there was excellent character development, especially for Lynda. Plus, seeing friends from the previous novels and how they changed was an extra bonus as well.
I also really enjoyed the thread of mystery throughout and how it all turned out. I thought it was headed in one direction, but not all was exactly what it seemed. There’s such important lessons in this one too – ones of believing and trusting, especially when it’s scary, and what it looks like to live life with believers – with all of our baggage, hurts and pains.
Small town life is so different from anything I’ve lived in, so that was really interesting to see through all three novels as well. It also kinda made me want to watch Hope Floats again.

Author Varina Denman has continued her heart wrenching tale of the citizens of Trapp, Texas. Though a Christian book, this author knows how to teach the Christ lesson without preaching, pushing, condescending, or prodding. This novel will appeal to any reader. In this character driven novel, Ms. Denman has created a deeply emotional and satisfying story-line. Ms. Denman brings you from the lowest low to highest high and does so masterfully.
The mysteries, manipulations, evil, and secrets are finally all revealed in this third book. The shocks and plots just keep coming as Ms. Denman had many threads to weave together in this book to create the finale for the story-line and Trapp. My emotions were all over the board in this book. I cried, laughed, shouted, and wanted to shake some of the characters. Ms. Denman's characters are very real with very real problems which need real solutions. This book highlights the mental illness of depression and its repercussions as Lynda comes to terms with her life and makes decisions that are life changing. Dragging yourself from the depths of despair and depression is easier said than done.
Trapp, Texas citizens have decisions to make and evil to face; will they become the Christians God intended or will they continue in their old ways. Tragedies will strike this small town, the aftermaths, and how the town resolves them will determine the fate of Trapp. Can Lynda and Clyde overcome all the evil which has tried to destroy them? Will the town of Trapp ever accept Lynda and Clyde?
Ms. Denman portrays masterfully how humans show one face to the world, when in their hearts, evil resides and has prominence. She also skillfully reveals the power of the human spirit to face and come to terms with evil, pick ourselves up, and move forward toward the life God intends for his children. Will there be a happy-ever-after for Lynda, Clyde and Trapp?
This story never lags or slows as it surges forward to the climax. The characters are well-developed and the story-line was intriguing as it grabs you from the first pages.
RECOMMENDATION: 5 + STARS
I hope this review has inspired you to buy this book and the previous 2 books in this series. You will not regret this purchase. This book is a standalone, however I recommend reading all three to increase your enjoyment of the story-line and characters. I highly recommend this book and the series to anyone that likes a solid, well-written and developed story-line that will keep you on the edge of your seat as you unravel the mysteries and secrets. I couldn't put this book down; I read it straight through.

Jilted is the third and my first read by author Varina Denman and let me tell you that I have been missing out on some really great storytelling. This can be read as a standalone but I think there is more of a depth to the story as you follow these characters and town. This story is about Lynda Turner who is Ruthie’s mother and her continual battle with depression. She has had a lot happen to her, especially as a young woman then as a married woman when her husband leaves her after believing lies about their marriage. However, she and Ruthie expected him to come back. He never did and 15 years later Clyde an old high school friend (recently released from prison) wants to begin a new life with her. After being abandoned by two men in her life already and being burned by her church family, Lynda hesitates and understandably wonders if she is still married and can even move on.
There is so much that happens in this book. All of it making for a riveting read that I was unable to put down. There is so much family drama, serious sickness, and a town and church that are just beginning to learn truths that were long buried. Varina Denman did an excellent job at showing Lynda’ depression: the triggers that put her in such slumps and the destructive nature that the depression had on Lynda. The romance was something else too; a slow burn that could not be ignored even as their lives and what they thought they knew was crashing down around them.
I will be backtracking and reading the previous two novels in this series and I will definitely be looking forward to her future works. I was provided with a copy for an honest review through Litfuse Publicity and the opinions are my own.

Lynda Turner’s frustration with the church folks is understandable, I can’t imagine the pain of being falsely accused and then shut out of a congregation. Since learning the truth, a few of the members try to make amends and Lynda hesitantly begins to soften her heart. Lynda is a complex woman who has endured more than her share of trials, bitterness, apathy, and depression.
Clyde Felton has stirred my curiosity from his first appearance in book 1 of the series. It was obvious from his kind-hearted yet apprehensive behavior that there’s more to him than meets the eye. He is the underdog that I’ve continually found myself rooting for. Clyde is a natural protector and he goes out of his way to help and encourage Lynda as they make peace with the past and move forward into the future.
Jilted is a satisfying conclusion for what has become one of my favorite series.

Jilted is the third book in the Mended Hearts series, and I need to let you know that I have not yet read the other two, but I sure will. The author does a wonderful job of bringing us up to date and I was able to follow the story and once you start you won’t want to put it down.
I can’t even imagine my husband leaving me after an argument, and then disappearing from our lives forever. This is what happened to Lynda Trapp and her young daughter. Of course, by the time this book is written Ruthie is now grown and happily married, and also living in Trapp Texas.
We are reunited with Clyde, a man who has moved on with his life, and shown great forgiveness, and he loves Lynda. Can these two hurt individuals make a life together, or will their past always stand in their way?
This story is going answer a lot of questions, you may or may not be surprised, but there are a lot of facts that are going to come alive. You don’t want to miss this page-turning summer read, I’m glad I picked it up, and will be reading the others in this series.

"My daughter, Ruthie, always called me a glass-is-half-empty kind of person, but she was wrong."
I love it when novels open with a opening statement that truly makes me want to read more and more. Kinda like that first bite of your favorite food. Memories are a lot like that. Just the smell or the taste of something can bring us back to the very essence of that moment. For Lynda Turner and Clyde Felton are each working through their own set of memories and in this case they are not at all pleasant.
Lynda has been abandoned by men her whole life and now she is dealing with the consequences of coping with those losses in the form of depression. She goes through episodes now and again and finds solace driving out to watch the windmills turn and cast shadows that will capture and move her memories to the past where they belong. She just needs to find a way to keep moving forward, while working at the local diner as a cook now.
For Clyde Felton, is seems if there is any crime in the town of Trapp, Texas, everyone seems to think Clyde may have had a hand in it or is responsible. After all, once a criminal always a criminal right? But with Clyde's criminal past, even though he served his time and is trying to find a way back, the residents can't seem to see him as anything but a tarnished penny. Unworthy or unneeded to be polished back to its former glory. Maybe that is why he developed feelings for Lynda. They say opposites attract, but in this case much like the scripture from the Bible in Ecclesiates 4:9-10, "Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor; If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up." This is the theme we see played out between Lynda and Clyde.

The hardest thing for anyone who has faced a bad past is the ability to find a way to move forward, and be able to leave it behind. For both Lynda and Clyde, they have to come to terms with doing so in different ways. Lynda has to deal with the issues of abandonment from those in her life, willingly or unwillingly. Clyde has to deal with always feeling like an outsider and that nothing he does will ever be good enough, especially within the church he attends. It seems hard for people to apply the Bible to their own lives and instead find ways to sit back and judge the actions of those around them, instead of seeing them like God does with love and unconditional grace and mercy. I give this novel a 4 out of 5 stars and this is the third in the Mended Hearts series. A book club discussion guide is included at the conclusion of this one.

Jilted is the third novel in the Mended Hearts Series and it truly is a story about hearts being mended. While this is the third book in the collection the only struggle a reader might have in picking up this book is connecting the backstory of her rich cast of characters. However, if this is the first book the reader picks up Ms. Denman perfects the written art of offering enough and just-not-quite-enough to make you hurry up with this book and pick up the other two in the series.
A contemporary novel with enough tension and suspense it had me turning pages much faster than I expected as I quickly became entrenched in the story of Lynda Turner and Clyde Felton. An ex-convict and a woman "jilted" by the men in her life who have to face the secrets of their past in front of the entire town.
The topic of depression is relevant in this story and Ms. Denman does a beautiful job bringing the lonely reality of the disease to light in a way that is truthful. Suicide is touched on lightly but, again, its relevance is important to the theme of this story-which, is hope.
Hearts do mend and Ms. Denman brings offers us that truth in Jilted. This book offers a good story with delicate but strong characters who see hope through the storms of life.

Jilted is the third book in Varina Denman’s Mended Hearts series, coming after Jaded and Justified. I am a HUGE fan of Varina’s, and have been since I read the first page of Jaded two months ago. I fell in love with her writing from day one, and haven’t been able to get enough of it since. That’s why I’m so disappointed that she’s only written this series! So far anyway. I’m hopeful she’ll write many, many more books in the years to come. Anyway, I cannot describe to you how much I loved both of the first two novels in this series, and I have to confess, I think I loved this one even more. Varina has an amazing talent; she manages to write sweet, poignant stories that grip your heart and have so many little touching moments and connections while still creating captivating, and even hysterical, scenes weaved into the middle. Because of that, I don’t think it would be a stretch to say she is one of my top three favorite authors of all time.
Lynda Turner definitely was NOT my favorite character when I was first introduced to her in Jaded. I think, for the most part, that was because I was learning about her from the point of view of Ruthie—her daughter—who didn’t exactly portray her in the best light, probably because she was the most hurt by her mother’s struggle with depression, other than Lynda herself of course. But I quickly realized I didn’t have anything against Lynda at all once I started reading her story. In fact, I loved her from the start of this book, and I absolutely loved diving into the intricacies of her past, and her pain, and all the other elements of her story. And I don’t want to bring in any spoilers, but anyone who’s read the other novels knows who the local ex-convict is, and I just want to say, I did love him from the start, as he is by far one of the sweetest men EVER, and I was always sure he and Lynda would be perfect for each other.
Anyway, this whole book was my favorite thing ever. I loved, loved, LOVED it!!! I’m literally already dying to read it again, because it is by far one of the most beautiful pieces of literature I have ever laid eyes on. Varina really outdid herself with this novel, and I cannot wait until she comes out with another new book! (I know, I know, this book just released not even a month ago, but I don’t care! I LOVE HER WRITING!). I’m sure you can tell by now what I’m going to say, but I’m going to say it anyway. I cannot imagine giving this novel any less than all five bookshelves, and it definitely has a permanent place on my all-time favorites list. I highly recommend this book to absolutely everyone who so much as knows how to read, because it is complete and utter perfection. And I promise you there’s no way you won’t love it.

Jilted is book 3 in the Mended Heart series written by Variana Denman. This is Lynda Turner's' story. Fifteen years ago Lynda was married to her love of life, Hoby,with a little girl, Ruthie. Hoby struggled with depression and when Lynda's ex-boyfriend told him she had an affair, Hobby left her. Hoby had sent her a letter telling her he wanted to see her, but he never came. Now years later his vehicle is found in the lake but his body is not in it.
Lynda has had many hard situations since her husband left. She was left to raise their daughter alone. She suffered severe depression and was shunned by her church and looked down upon by members of the community. She was forced to endue years of harassment from her ex-boyfiend, one of the wealthiest and enfluentual people in Trapp, Texas. She was a lonely person who felt abondoned by everyone she loved.
This is a story of what happens when parents control their children's lives. Parents may have lived longer and have more life experiences but they do not know the deep heart feelings their children have. In this story, several couples have had their lives and their children's lives almost ruined by one controlling father years earlier.
I enjoyed reading this series very much. It is so well written you can envision the family pulling together to help Lynda and Ruthie. I like how this is a Christian Drama that shows the real struggles Non-Christians go through trying to understand the truth. For some it will take years. For other's it may take a serious illness. I especially liked that the author wrote a final chapter letting us know how things turned out for Lynda and her family.

Ms. Denman not only wants to tell the story of a family wounded by the abandonment of the husband/father she wants to tell the best story of the series so far. Ms. Denman tells the story of forgiveness and redemption as well as what happens to you when you go to prison and then get out after serving your time. This is a very interesting mystery that is going to keep you guessing. Lynda and Clyde are remarkable characters that you fall in love even more and root for to succeed. This is one exciting book that will keep you flipping pages to keep up with the story. I am sorry to see this series come to an end however I am looking forward to the next book from this author with great interest.

I totally loved Jaded and Justified, and anxiously looked forward to reading JILTED. My friend http://cindylovenreviews.blogspot.com/2016/06/varina-denmans-jilted-50-sweet.html told me that it was depressing so I kind of dreaded starting it. But I told her how good the first two were and she said she gave this one a solid 4 stars, so I dug into this one, despite the depression warning.
Life hit and drama erupted in my own life and I put the book aside to deal with reality. I talked to my friend again and she mentioned that she read something about the bones that were found and she had no clue who they were because she hadn't read the first two books. I said bones? There were no bones mentioned in the first two books! But I made a guess who the bones belonged to, she told me I'd have to read the book to find out, and then I told her who killed that person, and she said "Wow, you're good."
Maybe. Or maybe I just know how a writer's mind works. So when I sat down to read JILTED I went in, knowing that the person I'd imagined would show up in this book, did show up, but dead. And I knew "who did it." But I didn't know why. Or how. And the events that got me there were well written, engaging, and even reduced me to tears a time or two. (Or maybe that was just because I was having a meltdown due to my real-life drama.) And I do have to admit that something about the who-dun-it moment was a complete twist that I never saw coming. I will give this book 4 stars because it made me cry--whether it was story related or real life related. And I don't like to cry when I read.
Loved these books, this series. And will definitely look for more books by Varina Denman.

I have to start out by saying I haven't read the other books in this series, but this book does stand alone. I also have to include that I normally do not enjoy books that have people who are depressed, or struggle in them. So all of that aside, I will say I struggled to get into this story. But because a friend had spoken so highly of this author's books, I pressed on, and I was happy I did. The suspense part of the story drew me. If you're a suspense fan, you will know Agatha Christie's Miss Marple, always alluded to the fact that small villages (towns) have secrets. And oh boy did Trap Texas have its fair share of secrets. From ex-convicts to gossiping blue hairs, you will see small town living at it's finest. (tic) But you will also see what is good about small town living too. A good story, a solid 4 stars from this reviewer.

Varina Denman was on my list of authors to read and when I was given the chance to read one of her books early, I jumped at the chance.
I missed reading books 1 & 2 of the Mended Hearts series, but I was instantly hooked. Varina did a great job of weaving the story in such away, that although I hadn't read her earlier books in the series, I was able to jump in and enjoy the ride! Now of course, books 1 & 2 are a must to read! :)
Jilted is a great story where a woman full of depression and past hurts finds healing and joy!

Jilted is the third and final book in the Mended Hearts series. I don't think you have to read the first two books in the series to understand and enjoy Jilted. The book tells the story of Lynda Turner, a woman who has battled abandonment issues and depression for many years, and Clyde Felton, an ex-convict and old friend of Lynda who returned to tiny Trapp, Texas after being released from prison. Lynda does not trust easily and when Clyde expresses an interest in a relationship with Lynda, she feels it hard to believe. The book shows how past actions and decisions affect the future. The characters are very realistic and genuine. It also ties up all the loose ends from the previous two books. Some of those resolutions were really surprising. I highly recommend Jilted and the entire Mended Hearts series. I will miss the residents of Trapp, Texas!
