Killer Takeout (Key West Food Critic Series #7) by Lucy Burdette

It’s Fantasy Fest at Key West, and food critic Hayley Snow is ready to celebrate. But a killer seems intent on crashing the party in this mystery from the national bestselling author of Death with All the Trimmings.
Every year, Key West’s week long Mardi Gras–style festival has tourists and locals alike lining up for costumed revelry and delicious eats. Key Zest magazine has assigned Hayley to write a piece on the fest’s grab-and-go food, so she’s planning on hitting up the mobile eateries while checking out the party preparations.
Hayley’s office mate, Danielle, recently elected Queen of Fantasy Fest, is also buzzing between festivities and fundraisers. But when a former royal rival gets taken out, Hayley needs to put down her party hat and her pen and figure out who served up a side of murder—before Danielle gets crowned a killer...

I have never read any of the other books in the series about Hayley, but I definitely want to read them now! This story had so much going on, but not in a crazy way. Being set in Key West there are a ton of aspects the author included to the story. From the Fantasy Fest, the hurricane threat, her writing job, a wedding, and oh my gosh the food. She brought in so many different characters with different talents that there was never a dull part to the book. I am also glad she author included some recipes at the end for some of the yummy food Hayley made in the book. Can't wait to read more about Hayley's adventures! I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

Great Book! This is a great book; this is the seventh book in the Key West Food Critic Mystery series by Lucy Burdette. Hayley Snow is a food critic in Key West. Every year there is a weeklong Mardi Gras style festival. Hayley has been assigned to write a piece on the fest’s grab and go food for the Key Zest magazine. Hayley’s friend Danielle has recently been elected the Queen of Fantasy Fest. When the former royal rival is murdered it is up to Hayley to find out what happened before something happens to Danielle as well. If you are looking for a great mystery that will keep you guessing until the end, then you need to read this book. I am looking forward to reading the next book in this series. A Review copy was provided to me in exchange for a fair and honest review. The free book held no determination on my personal review.

I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review. I've been waiting anxiously for the next chapter in the adventures of Hayley Snow. Having read all of the other books in this series (all 6 of them), I feel invested in the stories and I thoroughly enjoy them! The Key West setting helps to keep things interesting, since there always seems to be something or other going on there, but Lucy Burdette's writing is really what makes it all work! She flawlessly ties all of the characters, and their stories, and the solving of yet another murder together to create a thrilling, but very readable book. This book does not disappoint! I don't want to give any spoilers, but if you like a good story that moves quickly, quirky and fun characters, and of course, the cozy mystery genre, you will enjoy this book. I now find myself wondering what Hayley will find herself mixed up in next, and I will anxiously await book #8 in this series!

Cozy mysteries are always a lot of fun - and for some reason when you throw food into the mix they're even better. I loved the mystery in this one. It was full of twists and turns, false leads, and sudden epiphanies. The setting was incredibly fun and dynamic, with Fantasy Fest (think Mardi Gras) flooding the area with revelers and muddying the waters of the investigation, there was just so much going on. The Queen of Fantasy Fest may have killed the runner-up, but things are crazier than normal this year. Hayley isn't on the case, but she can't help but ask around when her friend Danielle becomes the prime suspect in the murder. But in true cozy fashion, she manages to think outside the box and head down an unexpected trail. Once or twice it took a turn that was just a tad too far out there for me. It pushed my ability to suspend belief, but this was full of great characters and a great mystery.

Dollycas’s Thoughts Zombies, a hurricane, and murder! OH MY!! This story is “KILLER”!!! Never a dull moment in Key West, but Halloween seems extra special. The week plus long event, Fantasy Fest, includes great food and drink, several events each day and costumes that are fun, scary, and some downright risqué. Hayley Snow is right in the middle of it all. She is reviewing places that serve takeout for Key Zest. Everything from food trucks to restaurants. She is also covering and participating in several events. Her coworker Danielle was elected Queen of Fantasy Fest after weeks of fundraising but she seems to have made an enemy. Another contestant is not taking her loss well and making Danielle miserable. Hayley dons makeup to zombify herself and takes part in the Zombie Bicycle Ride. Alcohol, costume restraints, or lack of balance has zombies tumbling everywhere. One right by Hayley so she stops to help. It takes awhile but she realizes it is the woman that has been bullying Danielle. When she dies police think there may have been foul play and Danielle is their main suspect. Hayley quickly starts her own investigation. Oh and in addition to that and work, her mother has arrived in Key West with her fiancé for their wedding, and Hurricane Margaret is brewing and Key West is in it’s path. Lucy Burdette has filled these pages full. What a fantastic story! All our favorite characters are back and Key West is full of tourists too. I absolutely love Miss Gloria. She is over 80 and Hayley has a hard time keeping up with her. Hayley and Bransford’s romance has some bumps and there is some trouble at Key Zest, I really enjoyed all the dialogue. The characters continue to grow and even after 7 stories they are fresh and interesting. I would love to be friends with all of them. The subplots entwine so comfortably with the main plot. Don’t interpret that to mean there is not excitement because there is plenty of that. I couldn’t believe how quickly I flew through this book. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next. It was after midnight and I kept telling myself just one more chapter, just one more chapter, and soon I was to the recipes. Don’t miss this one! Pack your virtual bags and head to Key West and enjoy!! Be sure to send me a postcard (comment) telling me all about your trip!!

This is a delightful series. A great location that is an actual character in the stories. Wonderful, quirky people that you'd love to know and spend time with (with a few exceptions). Great Key West events and locations. And, of course, murder. If this doesn't get you wishing for a plane ticket to the keys, I think you are hopeless.

I won this book in a contest but I couldn't help but review it. I also received a signed copy, and I wanted to share it in my Little Free Library, so I purchased another copy to share with my readers instead of parting with the autographed copy. This is the seventh book in the series, but somehow it's flown under my cozy radar and it's the first book I've read. (I'm now in the process of ordering the rest of the books.) That being said, I didn't have a problem following along. The author did a great job explaining people and their relationship with each other in a clear manner. I wouldn't even know it was a part of a series if I hadn't seen it listed online. I don't want to spoil the book but it is fantastic. It has a great premise and the fact that it happens during a zombie themed festival adds an added dimension. Nobody looks like themselves while in costume and wearing tons of face paint. I also really enjoy the foodie portion of the book too. The food descriptions left me salivating and the recipes look delicious. That being said, I love reading recipes, but I rarely am motivated enough to actually try something new. The coconut cake recipe ingredients are on my shopping list, I can't wait to try it.

I received this book from the author in exchange for a honest review. I haven't read the other books in this series, and, while the book did stand on it's own, I now want to read the series from the 1st book. Hayley Snow is a witty main character who made me laugh multiple times. This book had it all; food, social media, a baby, a wedding, a tropical storm, friends, parties, parades, and, a who done it that had me guessing until the end. It was fun to read the author describe all the things that I love about living in Florida. She had the unique southern seafood, the humidity, the storms, the laid back lifestyle, and the beauty. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to escape and go on a crazy, exciting Key West vacation.

Hayley Snow just can't seem to catch a break! Her job, her love life, her mother's upcoming wedding, and now, the weather! When Fantasy Fest starts in Key West, Hayley ends up smack dab in the middle of another murder. As she tries to help prepare for her mother's wedding, her coworker is a suspect in the murder of a Fantasy Fest Queen candidate and a hurricane is bearing down on the Florida Keys. While most of the people in her life are evacuating the island, Hayley is riding in zombie bike parades, getting her face painted, and eating a ton of great takeout food! Travel around the beautiful island of Key West during Fantasy Fest and experience some of the most amazing food on the island with Hayley and her family and friends. This is a must read!!!!!

atmosphere drives both the plot and the characters KILLER TAKEOUT by Lucy Burdette The Seventh Key West Food Critic Mystery Temperatures soar in Key West as the town celebrates Fantasy Fest. The Royal Court has been chosen, but one runner up does not take losing lightly and picks a fight with the Queen, Hayley's co-worker Danielle. As Haley Snow works on covering the event for Key Zest Magazine she samples numerous takeout foods and partakes of the the many activities found on the island. Adding to the activities, Hayley's mom and fiance are in town to get married. But with a hurricane brewing, tempers flaring, and Danielle a prime suspect in the suspicious death of her rival, Haley's got more on her plate than a mango hot dog! Burdette has crafted a fine mystery in this seventh installment of the Key West Food Critic Mystery series. Her use of atmosphere drives both the plot and the characters. Hayley Snow has really grown since her first appearance. She's toughened up. While she loves her family, island family as well as blood, and enjoys their company, she's evolving into an independent woman who doesn't need a man to be happy. She's able to stand up and speak out for herself. Her confidence has grown without sacrificing her caring wholesome self. KILLER TAKEOUT captures the atmosphere of a town on edge, a party town a step away from going too far. The weather turns up the heat creating tension, desires, and bringing out the competitiveness in its populace. As Hayley looks into the suspicious death she continues her work as a food critic providing us with mouthwatering food descriptions. We can almost taste the food, see the sights, and feel the humidity, thankfully safe in our cool homes without a murderer on the loose! In KILLER TAKEOUT Burdette skillfully combines atmosphere and characterization, with a thoughtfully plotted mystery to create a winning book! Recipes included. FTC Disclosure – The publisher sent me a copy of this book in the hopes I would review it.

"Zombie down" is not something you usually hear shouted in a parade but when Hayley Snow heard these words during the Fantasy Fest Zombie Parade she took it seriously. The zombie turned out to be Caryn Druckman who died shortly after her collapse The day before Caryn had been in a very public fight with Hayley's co-worker/friend Danielle making her a person of interest in the investigation of Caryn's death. Now during the chaos of Fantasy Fest, her mother's wedding and an impending hurricane Hayley is trying to clear Danielle's name. I have read and enjoyed all the books in this series. The author does such a great job of setting the scene that you will be able to "see" it as you read.

Hayley Snow is back with zombie cyclists, body painted tourists, a threatening hurricane, and (of course) a murder. Killer Takeout is the 7th book in Lucy Burdette's Key West Food Critic mystery series. This book centers around a murder during Fantasy Fest, an October staple in the Key West festivals. The descriptions are vivid and made me feel like I was there with Hayley. The plot was excellent and well thought out. All the details were there, and I figured out the solution around when Hayley did, which is always a bonus. Ms. Burdette continues to develop Hayley into a wonderful character. She is a smart woman with a logical, journalistic approach to figuring out the latest mystery that she and her friends and family get embroiled in. I feel like I'm watching Hayley mature through each book. The combination of plot, character, and setting keep me coming back for each new book in the series. Keep them coming! I received a copy of this book for a fair and honest review.

Another phenomenal book in a fantastic series. Lucy Burdette always delivers. Hayley Snow, along with her friends and family are enjoying Fantasy Fest with Zombies, fantastic food, and mayhem, when a murder occurs. Hayley is trying to enjoy the festivities and write her food column for the local paper while once again being caught in the middle of the action. I love the cast of characters and their interactions. This book has delectable descriptions of food, including recipes, animals, and Key West history. I highly recommend this series! I received an arc of this book in exchange for an honest review

I have loved this series from the very first book, and it just keeps getting better and better. Killer Takeout has everything -- the Key West Fantasy Fest Celebration, a zombie bike ride, a wedding, restaurants, food trucks, delicious recipes and, of course, a murder -- all in the midst of a looming hurricane. Haley, Miss Gloria and the other returning characters have become like family, and I enjoy watching the relationships continue to evolve and grow, and still have some surprises thrown in. The plot is strong with several twists that kept me guessing until the end, along with some definite nail-biting moments. I continue to love reading all about Key West and its quirks; conch's vs. tourists/visitors, the action on Duval Street, Robert the Doll (spooky) and of course the Mallory Square Sunset show with the Catman, Snorkel the bowling pig and Lorenzo the tarot card reader. I recommend this book without reservation and cannot wait for the next book in the series to come out!

I received a copy from the author for my honest review. And, honestly, this was the best of the series, I think! It has been a while since I have read the others, but the story just flowed so well. I wanted to just keep reading because I felt like I was there with Hayley. Although I am glad I didn't actually feel all of the heat and humidity. Hayley was very busy trying to do her job with takeout foods from the local restaurants. Then someone is murdered and her friend and coworker is the accused. So Hayley adds sleuthing to her duties. And then there is her mother and future stepfather to think about. And then, the weather needed to be watched! This was definitely quite the wild ride! I am sad I finished it but happy to have had such fun!

Killer Takeout is the seventh book in the Key West Food Critics series. Fantasy Fest has come to Key West and the town is buzzing. Hayley and her friends are back in this delightful addition to this series. There’s a lot going on at the same time as the Fantasy Fest, Hayley’s mom is getting married and everyone is waiting to see what happens with Hurricane Margaret. Hayley’s co-worker Danielle is accused of murder. Hayley knows that Danielle is innocent, now she has to find the murderer. The storyline flowed and had me hooked from the beginning. So much happened in this single book. A fabulous addition to this well loved series. Hoping for more in this series!

KILLER TAKEOUT is a feast of fun! You would think seven books into a series, an author might be running out of ideas. IF that is true, someone forgot to give author Lucy Burdette the memo because the Key West Food Critic Mysteries keep getting better and better! Murder meets Key West style Mardi Gras. You know you’re in for an exciting read after that sentence, don’t you? You’d be right! There was so much going on in KILLER TAKEOUT, I could never find a point where I wanted to take a break from the book. I normally brake at a new chapter, but with this story. I just kept getting drawn back in. How could I not? Not only was the story spectacular, but each chapter started off with a quote from a person or book that was so interesting I simply had to keep reading. If you’re looking for it, KILLER TAKEOUT has it! Murder, mystery humor, great food, nudity…what?! LOL It’s not what you think, but you’ll have to read it to find out more, ;-) Returning fans to this series will not be disappointed. If you are new to the series, you can read KILER TAKEOUT, without feeling lost. However, it will make you want to go back and read the rest of the series! Be sure to take a look in the back of the book for mouthwatering sweet and savory recipes!

Key West is hopping with activity, after all it's Fantasy Fest week! Hayley Snow is working on her article on the fantastic take out food available in her quirky town, and these delectable treats will leave your mouth watering! Her co-worker and friend Danielle was crowned Queen of the Fantasy Fest and Hayley and her charming roommate Miss Gloria are looking forward to participating in some of the outrageous activities. During the Zombie Bike Parade Hayley hears numerous calls and shouts of " Zombie down," but it isn't until she witnesses a horrible scene that she realizes there really is a zombie down. Hayley tries her best to help the injured zombie, but it appears that maybe the zombie simply imbibed a bit too much. Circumstances change quickly and when Danielle is brought in for questioning, Hayley quickly switches from food critic to investigator to help her friend. As Key West locals enjoy the festivities, the weather is taking a turn for the worse, a tropical storm is encroaching on them and before long Hurricane Margaret is whipping up a frightful storm, sending everyone scurrying to safety. Will Hayley be able to help Danielle, get Miss Gloria to the airport and help her mother as she prepares to marry Sam? You won't want to miss this exciting adventure in this next Key West Food Critic Mystery by the talented Lucy Burdette.

I've not read Lucy Burdette before but I certainly will now. While this is part of a series, at no point did I feel I had missed things or needed to go back to get history; this book stood on its own. Hayley, our main character, is a restaurant reviewer for a Key West magazine and is working on a piece about the take out places in Key West. Her mother is coming into town to get married and it is Fantasy Fest, a major Key West week-long party. When the woman who recently attacked one of her best friends is murdered, Hayley feels the need to sort it all out and prove her friend's innocence. But then who was the killer? Could it have been her friend's mother or aunt? A contestant in the Fantasy Fest royal court? Hayley starts putting things together just as a hurricane is bearing down on the keys. There is a lot going on in this book but it never seems rushed, nor do elements seem ignored. Plotting is good, storytelling is captivating, characters are interesting. Really, a well written story that regular readers will enjoy and that will captivate new readers. Buy this or get it from your local library. Very entertaining.

Killer Takeout by Lucy Burdette is the 7th installment in the Key West Food Critic mystery series, and quite possibly my favorite so far! Haley and her pals are back, and this week not only is it Fantasy Fest in sunny Key West, but Hurricane Margaret is about to bear down on the island. There's a wedding, naked people (body paint only!) running around town, a zombie bike race, Danielle as the Queen of Fantasy Fest, plenty of fabulous recipes, a little bit of romance and you guessed it - murder! I love the fact that we continue to see the development of the background characters/residents of the island, and really enjoy that our heroine, Haley, has an octogenarian sidekick! I did receive a copy of this book from the author for my honest review, which I've posted. I've read all 7 books in this series, and recommend that you do, too. 5 stars for Killer Takeout, I highly recommend it!
