His first thought at the start of every day was always the same.
He’s home in the cozy apartment he shared with his wife. It’s winter, and they’re snuggled under the down comforter they’d gotten as a wedding gift from his sister. His wife is warm and naked, her body soft as she sleeps in his arms. The scent of her shampoo, the expensive stuff he bought for her at the salon she loves, surrounds him. He would recognize that scent anywhere, the scent of his woman.
His body responds predictably to her nearness. Any time he’s awake and naked with her, he’s hard and ready to claim her. He moves his hand from her flat belly, up to cup a full breast, toying with the nipple that awakens instantly to his touch.
Wanting to see her and watch her reactions, he opens his eyes and is punched in the face by reality.
Every damned morning.
He’s not in bed with his wife. He’s alone in the room he calls home now at the Sand & Surf Hotel on Gansett Island. The wife he’d loved beyond reason, to the point of blindness to the faults that ended them, is long gone. She divorced him after ruining him in just about every way a man can be ruined, leaving behind memories that torture him.
Shane McCarthy stared up at the ceiling he’d painted white the winter before when the Surf had undergone extensive renovations overseen by his sister Laura and her now-husband Owen Lawry. The call from Laura, pleading with him to come help them get the hotel ready for the summer season, had finally drawn him out of the dark hole he’d been in for nearly two years, mourning the loss of his marriageand a big chunk of his sanity.
He needed to get up, grab a shower before his nephew Holden woke up and get them both to the brunch Owen’s grandparents were hosting to celebrate the newlyweds. Shane was thrilled to celebrate his sister’s happiness with a man he liked and respected, but the minute he got up, he would lose Courtney for another day.
The beginning of every new day was the only time he gave her anymore. If he had his druthers, she wouldn’t even get that. But he was unable to control the places his mind went in that ambiguous space between dreams and wakefulness. So he gave her those minutes and nothing else. He took the time, upon waking each morning, to mourn what’d been lost, to grieve for what would never be again and to wallow, however briefly, in the past.

If you have never tried one of Marie Force's books, you don't know what you are missing. I highly recommend this whole series, but to get the most satisfaction, you need to start with book #1. I want to be a McCarthy and live on this magical island. I have been looking forward to Shane's story for awhile now. He has seemed to have the weight of the world on his shoulders. So quiet. So sad. Utterly heartbroken. When he and Katie meet in such a dramatic fashion, I knew their story would be one-of-a-kind. Katie was more of a mystery, since we hadn't gotten to know her well yet. Being Owen's sister, we know she had a horrific childhood at the hands of her father. She has closed herself off from men, as a whole, to safeguard herself from being hurt. I can't imagine being 32 years old and never having gone on a date, let alone be kissed or anything more. These two have been through their own hell, and I think they are the only people capable of helping each other. Their story was sweet, romantic and full of passion. Besides the wonderful journey we go on with Katie and Shane, I felt like I also read a complete novel of updates for the rest of the characters. So many ups and downs for the residents of this island. I laughed and cried and held my breath for the outcomes. Kisses in the Dark is a beautiful, well-rounded novel for every character that we love from this series. After reading all 12 books in this series so far, I still can't seem to get enough. Believe it or not, but I actually crave it. I can't wait to open the book and re-visit the people of Gansett, just to see what's been happening since we left them last. And Marie Force didn't disappoint in that aspect of this book, either. I love the fact that Marie writes this series with characters that are so warm and caring, and not only towards their own family members, but also with their close friends, as well as everyone else in the whole community. There are very wealthy families, very poor families, and everything in between living together on this Island, and yet no one is made to feel like they don't measure up. Instead; these wealthy families pull together to help those who happen to be less fortunate. What a wonderful world this would be, if we could find a way to make this happen in real life. Great read!
Marie has done it again, she can write a book and make you feel like you are right there as one of the characters. I love reading her stories!
As always, another winner!
Once again Marie has blown me away this amazing book. I truly love Gansett Island & all the characters on that little island.. I loved this book just as much as I have all the others! I think the only sad part was where it was left off at.. I so badly needed more & wanted more ugh.. Is it time for the next book to come out yet? Katie & Shane are too cute together & I cannot wait to see how fast they can have some sweet little ones running around.. I hated certain sadness in the book & I hope that out of the 2 something good comes from the one having to do with Mac & Maddie.. As for Lisa her news is so bittersweet sadly! I also cannot wait to see more of Mallory! She is growing on me & I think she needs to move her little butt to Gansett Island already! I know she wants too...
