Description: This is a good summary of common topics in neurology. The images are of high quality and detailed, demonstrating various physical exam techniques that medical students and residents can use to enhance their skills. Helpful tables summarize common features of each major condition, and the sections have broad differential diagnoses for symptoms. Overall, this book has enhanced and updated the information since the 2015 edition.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an introductory learning resource for neurology. The book does an excellent job with short paragraph summaries for the major conditions with recent guidelines for diagnosis. The radiographic and cartoon images are useful and appropriate.
Audience: The audience appears to be students and residents and those not in subspecialties. This book definitely meets the needs of the intended audience, as it is written very simply. The authors are well-known neurologists from a variety of academic institutions.
Features: The book covers the general neurological exam in great detail with differential diagnoses to consider at each step. This is an excellent resource for new learners to understand the importance of each step. The section on movement disorders is a well done summary of the most common tremors and chorea syndromes. The images are clearly labeled and easy to understand with the descriptions. Missing is a section on neuroimmunology. If this is added to the next edition, this book will be an excellent introductory resource for medical students and residents.
Assessment: The book does a great job covering topics in neurology. While written in paragraph form, each section is succinct with all of the important details from findings to treatment.
